Failed TX State Inspection... Need help!

Failed because four systems readiness not set. I've owned it about a year and have only changed the oil and suspension. No check engine light work and no battery issues.

Fuel Sys Evap - Not Ready
O2 Sens - Not Ready
O2 Sens Htr - Not Ready
Catalyst - Not Ready

From my searches it sounds like possibly a rear O2 sensor is going out. I have no codes stored and no warning lights on... Where should I start? I have two weeks to get it fixed to get retested without paying again for the inspection. I can pass with one system not set.

Have you had to jump start the vehicle? I would start with a battery test first and foremost. I assume the shop did not find evidence of DTCs otherwise they would have notified you (which could interfere with monitors.)

Assuming that you haven't cleared any DTCs recently or had to jump start the vehicle, and/or the battery hasn't failed; we'd need to determine if the system is entering closed loop.

No battery issues at all, not even a slow or weak crank. I have a hand held Matco generic code reader for my wife's Volkswagen and I ran it for codes and it came back with 0 DTC's.

How would I go about determining if the system is entering "closed loop"?

Thank you so much for your help!

Not sure about the code reader you're using, but the one I have, Scanguage 2, is also a cheopo, and it has an option for showing open or closed loop.

Maybe yours does too?

The only time I've encountered a not ready error is when the battery was disconnected. Had to drive a while before it became ready. Sounds like you're dealing with something else though. Sorry not more help.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't.

Bummer. Well, I'm sure you can find a better option than this, but if you want to meet me in Smithville, we can run my gauge on it and you'll know if it's open or closed. Won't really solve your problem though.

Long drive 1.5 hours? Your call. PM me if you want to go that route.

Most generic OBDII code readers have a "Monitor Readiness" option which shows the status of the monitors.

Some even allow you data lists, if you have a data list option you want to see the Data Point for "Open or Closed Loop."

If your OBDII reader does have a "Monitor Readiness" function I would recommend disconnecting the battery for about 5-10 minutes or using your ODBII Tool to erase the DTCs (I know you don't have any, but you want it to erase stored data, DTCs don't matter) and then drive it about 30-60miles non-stop and check the monitors, the should all trip completed.

Yes, it does have a "Monitor Readiness" I think it just read "Okay" or "N/A" if I remember correctly but I'll have to look again. I will do the battery thing this weekend when I have a chance to drive it non stop and see what that does for me.

Thank you again for your help!

Don't forget to let the vehicle idle for about 5 minutes with no loads on (i.e. headlamps, HAVC, ect.) to let the vehicle relearn its idle before you go driving it, this way you don't get a boggy idle.

Okay, dissconnected the battery last night and let it idle for 5 minutes after hooking the battery back up. Here is what I have after my 34 mile drive to work this morning

VSC Light is on (Trac off light was on too until I cycled the key when I got to work)

Here are the IM Readiness readings

Here is the Trouble Code screen

Here are the menu on the scan tool I am using

So it looks like the O2 sensors set? What about the other systems? Just put some more miles on it?

Update....

Followed the link below I found for Zero Point Calibration from another post. I just did it in my parking garage at work and have not had a chance to drive around but the traction lights have gone off at least for the time being. I assume the system just needed to be reset from the battery being dissconnected.

Can you post a link to the process you used? Did you use the process from the FSM? Or one you read online?

Think is the process I have used: Toyota 120 Platforms Forum

Thanks ebg18t!

Sorry! I should have mentioned that, I think I mis-read your vehicle as an '05. Yes the '03-'04 4Runners lose ZPC (Zero Point Calibration) when the battery is disconnected.

According to all the pictures you shows it looks like all the monitors set properly, the ones marked "N/A" are not actual monitors on the vehicle but options the scantool looks for. You would see some abbreviation of "Incomplete" or "Failed" if the monitors didn't set.

Good search and glad it worked.

Sweet... I'll try to get my inspection redone on Thursday and see what happens. Thank you for your help, you're a life saver!

All systems set, all systems passed... BlackWorksInc I owe you some beers if you're ever in Houston, thanks again!

I'm happy for you that you got your stickers, but having to put them on would be enough for me to reconsider if I ever thought I would move to Texas.

In most states, if you don't pass inspection, you aren't allowed to register your vehicle. I guess some states need to know you PASSED!
