Fan always ON?

Hi, the radiator fan is ALWAYS on in my 96 4-runner 3.4 liter. Is this normal? Is this a fan clutch issue or NO issue?

always on =probably gone bad. Should kick on and off. See if you can turn it by hand ENGINE OFF and cool. It should spin a little like half a turn before it catches. if it feels stuck it's permanantly engaged.

Ok, I tried to move it...and it does move, but not freely. Should it just SPIN FREELY when cold? Because it does NOT "SPIN" FREELY.

It should give some but, it's not quite spn freely. So it's not locked at the clutch. Are you sure its on all the time. IT will spin with some slip normally and kick in with a lot more roar noise when engaged. When you first start it cold it kicks in and make that loud fan noise then slowly gets quiet as it not fully engaged until it warm to the right temp.


In other words it should be spinning some all the time but, not locked in all the time.

I think it's ok. It's not like my CAMRY where fans SHUT OFF and ON. This appears to spin ALL the time to some degree.
