Farewell 4Runner :crybaby:

I am sorry to say that I traded in my beloved 4Runner for a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo X.
I've been looking for a 5th gen runner, but all were out of my price range. I simply couldn't afford another 4runner in my situation.
My runner was great to me. Never left me stranded, never felt in danger on the road. The throttle response was great with the V8, and the off-road capabilities speak for themselves. I had it just the way I wanted it: slightly lifted/leveled, bigger tires, all the bells and whistles.
So why did I get rid of it? It had 228k miles (I know, I KNOW). The shocks needed replacing again. The timing belt was 30k miles overdue and needed to be replaced, again. Rubber bushings and bearings needed replacing. The transmission was NEVER serviced, although still performed fine. Leaking exhaust manifold since the beginning. All in all, it needed $1000s worth of work to get back to great shape. I couldn't afford that, either.
I've searched and searched, and couldn't find a newer runner that was affordable to me. I started looking at Jeeps. They're more affordable. Perhaps due to cheaper parts and not as prestigious of a record as the 4runners (although not bad).
My jeep is a 6 cyl with full-time 4wd much like my v8 runner, but with my jeep there is no 4-low, no diff-lock, no choices. Some have the terrain selector, but not mine.
After this snowstorm, the jeep performed fine, but I just don't have the same piece of mind as I had with the runner. The v6 jeep is under-powered, at least under-torqued, with very little low rpm power. All the power is above 2,500 rpm. The trans shifts quickly, too quickly.
What I like about my new jeep: the fuel mileage (averaging 20 mpg over the runner's 15.5 mpg), the navigation is Garmin, so I think that's better than the Toyota one, it has lots of info on the vehicle (coolant temp, oil temp, oil pressure, trans temp, tire pressure for each tire, even engine hours), the sound system is better, it has a panoramic sunroof!, the tires are the same size as my stock runner (265/60/18), there's more room inside the cabin (headroom, legroom, etc).
I think I had one of the best 4Runners out there. It had almost every option (no 3rd row, which is good, and no rear entertainment, which is good, too). It's hard to find a v8 runner with nav and rear air suspension. I'm going to miss it for a long time. I don't have the confidence that I made the right decision yet. Oh well, such is life.
I want to thank everyone who has helped me over the years. This forum has very informative people who care about helping others and making the 4runner owning experience great.
Thanks for everything,
Chris

Sad to see you go, but will love to see you come back. Having worked for Ford and Dodge that is exactly why you found Jeeps for cheaper than a 4runner. The reality is the build quality and reliability are a direct correlation of price. Happy you love the new vehicle, just be careful of those transmissions on those things.

Congrats. Not being a hater but I hope you have extended warranty on that Jeep.

You always get what you pay for and you certainly recoup it upon sale.... Maybe you found a different framework to base your decision on, but I don't understand the Math...A quick KBB search (all things equal - vehicles in same ZIP Seattle area and in "very good" condition) shows that Jeep at almost 20k and the 4Runner at 12k for a private party sale price. It could equate differently in your area, but I figure the difference between the two would be similar enough. How did you foot the 8 grand difference yet say a few grand in repairs was unworkable?

Curious on what you paid cause for what you have that been the higher model and more expensive i can't believe you didn't get some bells and whistles.

I say that because added to the stable december 31st is my girls little SUV she wanted it we got it. I made fun of it until i actually drove it and well I will say the 636 miles on it currently were fun and it was tested HEHEHE off road never failed.

Fully loaded Nav, remote start leather heated seats, winter package, etc and it came out to 32 grand and some change

2016 jeep trail hawk fully loaded even included the block heater tho they thought you have to purchase the wire for it separately i was like uhhhh ok looked under the hood and poof there was the cable for it.

Included was the life time warranty on everything, also included was the spay shit they put underneath to protect it from the salt and the interior was also done with stain stuff. If they can remove it they place the carpet seats etc

I put $1000 down, trade-in (wince) was $4500, jeep was 21.5k.
Car loan dude. And yes, I understand that I could have sold it for more money than the trade-in. Might have gotten $6k for it if sold privately.
In the end, I am saving money because my auto loan has close enough payments (300 vs 350). Gas is WAY cheaper with the jeep. Since I fill up twice a week rather than 3 times a week, I save 35 a week, 140 a month in gas. $50 difference in my monthly loan payment, I save $90 a month. Car insurance is a little cheaper, too.
Both manifolds were cracked, and replacing them is mucho dinero (thousands each side). Timing belt is another grand easy. Shocks, brakes, bushings, diff fluids, etc. was all needed.
No used vehicle with +200K miles is in very good condition. Fair is more like it, but with all the things that needed to be done, fair might be pushing it.

I paid $21.5k for my 2012 Jeep GC. It's has the Laredo X package, so it has heated leather, nav, panoramic moonroof, remote start, full time 4wd, 18" wheels, and much more. These jeeps are very nicely equipped. I bought it from a Ford dealer, not a Jeep dealer, so I think the warranty is only the manufacturers. I think it was a good deal for this vehicle.
I am still sad to see the runner go.

You're right, from what I've read, I do need to take care of that tranny.

ok i was about to say man you got had if it didn't have anything.

Its nice tho i get the jeep family discount tho so that certainly dropped the cost for her car.

That undercoating will be off after a winter or two. In regards to the interior protection package that is also a sales gimmick.........trust me. I managed the people that did the applications of those. . .it is really and over priced promise. And getting anything claimed you eventually have to pull someones teeth out.

Well its a good thing it was free of charge then wasn't it. Im a sale mans worst nightmare when it comes to haggling not to mention there was a reason why they were open on new years day because they hadn't made their numbers.

The V8 4th gen had the most overbuilt drivetrain of any mid size SUV. I'll never own an American can, they're junk.

Can't believe you let it go for $4.5k.

I scanned the OPs post and saw "sold Toyota" and "bought Jeep". TL:DR

There are plenty of Jeep forums out there. We (me)personally left Jeeps behind for a reason, but wish you the best.

I'd take a mid-2000's or earlier Wrangler for modified fun any day though!

I basically did what you did with my '98 SR5 4R. Except I rode it til she broke. Sounds like my cylinder head gasket is blown & a coolant leak (prob water pump) somewhere. I have 273,000 miles on it and had spent a little money on it the last couple of years so I'm bummed. I'm told better off dropping in a new engine than doing repairs. Anybody on this site interested in something like that?
