When shopping for a new vehicle in 2012, I found the middle back seat of the Outback less comfortable than the 4Runner. Neither is a 1000 mile trip though. Only the Xterra had a smooth back seat but the distance hip to hip was smaller. I need to fit three butts back there. What got me is when I looked at used Xterra they were always all rusted up in certain locations.

I just traded Sheila in for a 2013 Subaru Outback LTD. I decided it was time when I found that my frame rails had rusted completely through in the typical spots, right above the rear LCA mounts. Since she probably didn't have a full winter left in her, I decided it was finally time.

Anyway, just wanted to say thanks to all of you that helped me over the years. I was able to keep this thing going WAY longer than it should have because of the great info, enabling me to do so much work myself.

She was a great vehicle for over 6 years, as long as I replaced crap tons of parts every year. She handled the couple years of massive snow here in NE with aplomb, and i had tons of fun with it.

Good luck to the rest of you on keeping these 3rd Gen's on the road. Happy trails!

I didn't really know you, but I understand the pull toward the Subaru. It was a tough choice I made recently buying a used 4runner or a used 4ester. I ended up going with 4runner. Sometimes I experience some heavy buyers remorse... but who knows what would have happened if I'd gone the other way, looking for an equally low priced vehicle.
