Faster 4Runner

When I bought my T4R back in may of 2005, it had the smaller, stock 225 tires. When I got the 265's a few months back, the car seemed to be a bit less responsive/slower...

Not to say that I would switch back to the smaller tires (they didnt look good IMO), but do the bigger sidewalls on the bigger tires result in more loss of power going to the ground, due to things like the tire twisting, etc..?

Odd question but I couldnt find anything related to it in the search.

do you know your stock gear ratio? i dont know if the runners with stock 225s had the 4:10 gears but thats what I have and mine came with 265/70 and i have 265/75 right now.

I don't plan to go any bigger. it's only 2WD.

You're about 10% off from stock gearing so you're actually going faster than your speedo says. You will be more sluggish unless you regear to 4.10's.

you are probablly looking at a 3:85 setup or 3:90

4:10 is what runners with stock 265s have

not sure about the 2wds with the stock 225s

I've seen 4.10 3rds go for about $200 plus shipping. Figure a minimum of $150 for install if you're not mechanically inclined, like myself. Note this would be the best deal you can get from what I've seen out there.

A full regear would normally run $600 all-in. This would be your best bet if you were going to bigger tires. If you're going to stay at 265's, then just find a 3rd gen 3rd member and you're good to go.

If memory serves, my 2001 has a ratio of 3.73. I may be off on that last digit, but it is 3.7?. Bottom line with stock tires I go 68 mph @ 2,000 RPM. With a 4.10 you would go 60.8 MPH @ 2,000 RPM with stock tires.

There's a minimal chance you have the 4.10s. My wife drives a '99 2WD 4R that came stock w/ 225s and I believe her's has the 3.90s. (I can't remember for sure.) Her's also came stock w/ 15" rims and when I upgraded the tires to 265s w/ 16" rims, there was definitely a power loss and mpg reduction. I was aware of this going in, b/c I've always put bigger tires on previous trucks of mine, but non the less, it's still there.

Having had the new tires and rims on hers for over 6mons now, I no longer feel the loss of power. (I've basically forgotten how the '99 was before.)

I can tell you my '02 4R has the stock 265s and 4.10s and is not at all sluggish. I love the power it has.

If we planned on keeping her 4R longer, I'd definitely upgrade the gears. A local gear shop quoted me $600 for gears and labor about 6mons ago.

I know what you mean. The smaller tires made the runner feel like a jackrabbit and when I put the big tires on I was really dissapointed. Now it doesnt feel slow at all because it's been so long. thanks for all the replies everyone.

edit: a second thought....would the fact that the tires are 5-10% larger in diameter offset the sluggishness, because the car is traveling 5-10% farther per wheel rotation?

I don't know if will offset the slugishness but you're actually traveling further than your odomoter says and driving faster than your speedo says.

exactly. It may FEEL more sluggish, but it could be traveling at the same speed...

That's true. Here's an example:

Me and some friends drove seperate vehicles from AL to MO a couple months ago. I drove my 4R w/ 265 (31") tires and my odometer said it was a 600 mile trip. The girl following me drove her Honda CRV w/ (not really sure, but much smaller tires) and her odometer said it was an 800 mile trip. Looks like if we drove everywhere together for a month, she would have logged much more milage than me even though we traveled the same distance together.

So when you step your tires size up, your odo and speedo will be off. (At least your odo will say you've traveled less milage than you really have!) But if you get new gears installed to match your new tire size, your speedo will be more accurate.

not to be a smart ass but it would be funny to step up size in tires and you wouldnt be loosing mileage and could keep a low mileage car for trade off later.. lol

well....toyota is not going to design their cars so they are inproperly calibrated when they come out of the factory.
