Fatty's 88 4Runner Build

So... Since I'm going to keep the 4runner I figured I would start a new build thread because this will be an epic build. I hope to be done with it within 6 months but 3 of that will be with me out of town. My goal is to be done by July 1st next year. The plan is to fix the 22re, if it has enough power for my needs then I'll stick with it, if not I may drop in a small block Chevy.

The plans:
Beefed up 22re
D60 axles front and rear with ARB's and 5.38 (maybe higher) gears
4 link double triangulated rear suspension
3 link front end
Coilovers front and rear
37ish tire size
Bob the rear of the 4runner by a foot or so
Move the rear axle back and front axle forward just enough to give a 0* approach and departure angle

Interior is a whole other project but I'll get to that later.

So, to start I figured the engine needs to come out first. Of course I enlisted the help of FoG's slave labor and put them to work!!

Within a couple hours, 2 very hard working and smart mechanics they had the engine out and on a stand.

Tomorrow the youngins will tear down the engine and some time this week I'll take the block and pistons to a machinist and see why I'm getting all the blow by.

Talk to crazy Ed's about the axle mods. He did the narrow, cut and turn on my front 60. Did perfect work, c's were dead on caster wise. Let me know when you wanna get your axles. I have a few secret sources for 60s down by penrose.
 
Should be fun. Having never done an engine rebuild myself I should learn a ton. Love having the boys involved for no other reason than so they can learn to fix their own vehicles someday.
 
When I get back from ALC in march I'll find some 60's. I'll let you know Nate and see what you can find.

I decided about an hour ago to scrap the little 22re and go with a Chevy 350. I made the mistake once of trying to get the little 4 banger to put out and I'm not going to do it again. Especially since I'm going to add a bunch of weight and bigger tires to the 4runner. I'll still fix my 22re but then I'll sell it as a brand new engine.

Why not go with an LS1 or something?
 
And here comes the part where everybody tells you why your carefully considered engine choice is wrong and immoral.

There's a 1UZ for sale out here for $500. Harness and computer and everything. :D

Because I don't want to rip transmissions in half *cough* Nate.

From what I'm finding in my research so far, it will be very easy to get a stock 350 to get around 275-300hp and 300ft/lbs of tq. That is more than plenty for me.

I have a lot to learn. I will put a chevy v8 in the 4runner though. I am not sure which engine I will use but I want a solid reliable power plant with the power numbers above. I prefer an auto tranny so i will use a complete chevy drive train. This will more or less be a chevy vehicle with a 4runner body. The same vehicle that I used to dislike now seems like a very good idea. haha.

I'm not opposed to a Toyota engine. What are my tranny and transfer case options for that engine? I haven't done any research for that engine. I want to use an auto tranny but I also want transfer case options for either dual cases or regearing the tranny.
 
While I personally would not put a Chevy engine in a Toyota, I kinda helped in the decision. We were looking at a big empty engine bay and I jokingly suggested it. I guess now we move forward with it.

Lexus trans and Inchworm adapter to r151 is the one I saw, I'm sure there's other options.

Divorced t-case is always an option, as long as you're dumping bucks...

WAY more power! If it doesn't come close to 300hp then I'm not even going to consider it. Nate was telling me about using a 302 out of a 88-93 mustang. It's a smaller package so I don't have to use a big body lift. Ideally, I'll use or make a hood cowl so I don't have to use a body lift at all. I would like to raise the drivetrain while I'm at it and do a flat belly. We'll see... I cannot get too creative because this gets very expensive very fast!!
 
sounds like a sweet build plan. with what your gonna run under this bad boy, dont rebuild the 22, just upgrade now and save the money doing it right the 1st time. the 22 wont be enough for what your looking at. im sure your gonna run 37-42 inch tires.

if you run a chevy engine, better look at upgrading the drivetrain to handle the extra power. another option would be a 3.4 s/c swap. auto crawler is much better imo. great all around and stalling isnt an issue unless you roll backwards in drive
