Feel like i got kicked in the nuts..... Pinion bearing repair estimate

just got an estimate from a shop to replace pinion bearings replaced in the rear
$1800 without new ring and pinion set
$2200 with new ring and pinion
damn right......... is this the going rate (from a big nation wide chain)??
and i already know..... do it yourself save money...... get a whole new/used junkyard rear.........

dont have the time or know how or tools for that..... what have you guys paid for this job at a shop????

"Pretty cut and dry if you ask me. I am a shop, and here is my parts and labor rate.

New V6 master install kit $125
Labor to pull the 3rd and re-install only $225
Labor to tear down 3rd and rebuild $150
Gear oil $15

$515 assuming the gear themselves are still good. My shop would refuse to replace only one bearing. If one is bad, then you usually have more than one on the way out. Lots of metal floating around in the housing and oil, and too much to take the chance. Do it right the first time. FWIW, master install kits usually run between $125-199, so that is difference between $515 and $600."

Either way it seems really high for that shop that quoted you. You have a better chance going to an offroad shop with experience on rear end rebuilds. THey probably give you a better price.

To swap in a new (used) rear is an INCREDIBLY simple task. Take [MENTION=80933]4x4runner2002[/MENTION] up on his offer and get it done for a very very VERY small fraction of the cost.

its at AAMCO.... "driveline specialists" so i feel confident they can perform the work correctly but for top dollar....

heres the itemized details...
all parts are "premium" with a retail 100% markup it looks like...
$648 master rebuild kit... not just the pinion bearing kit
$474 ring and pinion set.... old set damaged from heat
$98 shims
$97 gear oil
$680 labor
$105 tax

$2100 total

anyone else had this done? or am i the only sucker to have a shop do it?

It dont madder how balls deep they are, they tore it down to give you the quote they can put it back together. Like stated you can get entire new rear end with arb locker for that.

Well hell, balls deep...drop the rear shaft and cover up the giant hole from the missing 3rd at flat bed it with AAA? and I am not sure if Yotamasters sets up diffs. If you do give Yotamasters a buzz and they set up diffs let us know because ill head there when I regear. Zuk does rears but will not set up clamshells


Looking at $97 in gear oil and $98 in shims on the estimate, I would have screamed DROP EVERY EVERYTHING :wow2:

PLEASE STOP do NOT let AAMCO touch your vehicle. I don't care (and you shouldn't either) if they have taken every body panel off of the vehicle, do NOT let them do that job for you. Look up reviews on ANY AAMCO nationwide and I am positive you'll find a LOT more poor reviews than good on anything other than an oil change or chassis lube. Even including the OBVIOUS fake reviews used to try and boost their rating.

AAMCO is on a sort of "do not use" list by a LARGE number of US Military bases for their notoriously high prices and poor service.

It depends from to shop to shop. Some shop charges a flat fee for labor plus parts. But any dealership or independent shop with charge a fee per. hour plus parts. The shop I work for is $125 per. hour labor. The book time on that rear end overhual and rebuild is 8hrs according to alldata. So at 125 that's $1000 just on labor.

That labor is pretty cheap!

wow... you got bent over bud.
i did a full regear and dual ARB install for less than $3500. yeah i did most of the work but ran into a snag, ended up dropping off both diffs (a part required some machining that i could not do) to have them double check my work and so i ended up paying labor. you could have bought a brand set up from East Coast Gear Supply for the $1800 with a ARB locker...

i hope you will never make this mistake again. dont ever go to those types of shops, them or midas or the like, all they do is screw people. not to mention they dont do quality work, they use cheap parts and mark them up 70+%. -how do you think they where able to knock $1000 off the price? they are still making money on it.

Could you the master install kit yourself?
My pinion bearing was bad and I bought the bearing kit from lowrangeoffroad.com and I bought the crush sleeve eliminator. Dropped the diff out and took it to a shop to have it set up. I was somewhere around $500 with parts, new seals, labor and all.

Ask them if you could buy and bring your own part??

i expect some jabs and mocking with all the great mechanics, gear heads, and diy'ers on here........ but come on lets strive for originality and comments that are actually funny. this joke has always been lame.

UPDATE.... after fighting with these jackasses at the shop all week, im down to $1300 total out the door....... with my original gear set cause it was good enough shape to go back in. i know not as competitive price as other shops i called this week but better that $1800.

note to (idiot)self.... dont let jackass shops touch my T4R.
