Feels like I'm chugging when going uphill?!...

Hey guys, I've been experiencing, for lack of better terms a chugging sensation when going uphill at highway speeds (65-70), maybe stumbling is a better term but either way it doesn't seem engine related as I don't hear or notice any change in the RPM's while this is occurring. So I'm puzzled. Has anyone else experienced this. Oh just some background, 2004 Sport V8 4X4 220,000 miles Fox 2.0 coilovers and shocks plus 1/2" spacer. 1.25 spidertrax, stock rims 265/70/17 Destination M/T .

is it an actual feeling like a vibration or movement of the vehicle or is it a sensation or noise that isn't affecting movement?

I get a feeling that feels like some kind of driveline lash or maybe something in the drivetrain....and yes I run the shit out of the grease gun on all the U-joints and slip yokes

Plugs have not been replaced, but I thought if it was that that its have some rpm variation but I'm not getting that but I'm also experiencing some hard to start episodes so it may indeed be a plug issue ???....

Could be an ignition coil going out. You could pull out all the ignition coils and look for one that is burning out. (Discoloration)
If the original spark plugs are in there..they should probably be replaced.

I have the same exact thing going on in my 05 v6. The sensation reminds me of a manual driving in too high of a gear. I generally notice it on uphill inclines in 5th gear between the point where it will downshift out of OD. The truck kind of lugs for lack of a better word. I’ve monitored for misses and like you said I can’t find any engine related cause. I believe anecdotally that Toyota keeps their shift points high and rpm range low thus my truck really won’t go over 2500rpms unless I’m really getting on her. The result is a slight stumble because it’s trying to stay in higher gears to preserve fuel economy. Put your shifter in 4 on the highway and guaranteed you won’t feel it. Just as a test, because your mpg will go to shit.
