Fender Flare options

I found a nice nice 4runner with all the options I like in great condition, only its not a limited. The fender flares on this rig aren't the typical awesome ones so im wondering if theres a way to delete the side steps without removing the flares too?

It's a 1999 Highlander SR5.

Simple, remove the running boards. The front flare just ends short. Then, you buy new front mudflaps from the Toyota dealer.

Part numbers:
PT413-35966-DF MUDGUARD, 1 26.49
PT413-35966-PF MUDGUARD, 1 31.79

It will line up like this:

New mudflaps come with new hardware which is always good.

Oh that's perfect, could you tell me more about the HIghlander edition? Is there anything particularly great about them compared to a limited?

The 1999 Limited 4WD and SR5 4WD models had the tallest springs of any 4Runner available.

The main differences are:

1. Limited has different, digital climate control. SR5 Highlander has the same manual climate control as other SR5's.
2. Limited has cladding on the doors and larger flares. SR5 Highlander has skinny black unpainted flares.
3. Limited bumper is fully painted, not just partially. SR5's bumper has only the metal painted.
4. Limited flares are drilled into the body, meaning removal would leave holes. The black flares shown on the highlander model mount in the fender well. They also don't extend onto the bumper like the Limited.
5. Both are available with locker, both have the same motor, pretty much the same after that... the rest can be shared between the two, like leather, rear heat, etc...
6. Highlander Edition has a hood scoop

You're out of luck, they've been out of production for a couple years now.

You can still get the base front mud guards (with hardware) from Toyota. I put a pair on last week after finally ditching my banged-up running boards. They don't look that great with the SR5 flare, but do fit nicely in the mounting location with no drilling. I drive on gravel a lot, so I figure they're better than nothing. The part numbers are 76621-39395 and 76622-39395.

Should these also work on a 2002 SR-5? I have the skinny chrome flares on my rig. This is about the only thing keeping me from removing my fender flares.

Yeah, Toyota says they fit the 2002 also. I think they might even line up nicely with the skinny chrome, no promises though.
