After searching for over 3 months, I finally found a 3rd generation 4Runner I liked enough to buy! Thanks to everybody here for all the help, both directly and indirectly (the buyer's guide is great).
It's a 2001 SR5 4x4 Millennium Silver with 180k miles. (Thunder Cloud Metallic Grey was my first choice, but if you squint right in low light they look the same.) Two previous owners, and the AutoCheck report says it had a single accident in 2003 with minor damage to the rear, no evidence of it today. Otherwise unremarkable history, always passed emissions tests.
Exterior is in very good condition, some small scratches but no big dents or dings. No rust. Interior is also very good, has the optional moonroof.
No mechanical issues, and the owner kept pretty good records of all the service done on the vehicle. Timing belt and water pump were done 500 miles ago.
I did notice that the lower ball joint recall doesn't show up on the Toyota service history. Will they still do it if I show up at a dealer?
I paid $5000 for it which was the firm asking price. I thought it was a pretty good deal for the vehicle, especially in CA. The seller threw in the Haynes repair manual and the K&N air filter cleaning kit.
Probably will take the running boards off shortly, and then do some of the "starter mods" detailed here on the forum. It's my daily driver and I'm coming from a 2000 Camry, so trying not to hurt the MPG much. Drove it 120 miles today and everything felt good!
