Finally!!! Completed Head Gasket Replacement

Just got my 90 4runner running again last night (actually about 1:30 this morning). And I have to say that I hope that I never have to replace head gaskets on a Toyota v6 again! I seemed to take forever to complete. Every time I thought I had what need to be done on any given task there seemed to be another hose, clamp, nut or bolt that needed to be removed or installed. But now the 4runner is running and just in time. My Backup vehicle, a 90 Isuzu Trooper w/ 265,000 miles on the original 2.8l v6 just jumped time. We were down to my wife's Honda Civic as our only running vehicle for the past three days.

My wife now wants the garage back so she can park her car out of the weather - she has already cleaned up my mess and has her car parked in the garage.

I don't look forward to telling her that I am taking away her spot to work on the Trooper and our golf cart that needs a new top end.

But anyway, thanks to those who run this site and those who post on this site. You all are creating an awesome wealth of information for us DIYs.

I work slow compared to most people. Took many days/nights to get everything removed. Then spent several nights cleaning parts while waiting on the machine shop to resurface and check out the heads. Once i got the heads back it took only about three nights work to get everything back together.

Things definitely go together easier than they come apart. When taking something apart for the first time I take it slow so I can try to understand and remember how everything fits together. If I had to do it again I think I could in about half the time.

Now it time to put a timing chain set in my Trooper.

Man, I'm on my 3rd head gasket on the 94 3.slow. I had it done though, didn't have the time, nor the place to do it myself. $1200 later, seems to be running better.

Are you having the heads resurfaced and pressure checked when you replaced the head gaskets? That sounds like a lot replacements, even for the 3.slow. There must be something wrong somewhere. How many miles between replacements? Who is making the gaskets you are using for replacement?

Best I can tell from looking at the history of my 4runner, this is the second time they have been replace (at 292,500 miles), with the first time being replaced just after 100,000 miles.

On every vehicle that I have replaced head gaskets (4runner, Mazda 626, 1979 Toyota PU w/ 20R), I have the head resurfaced, pressure checked, and a leak test done on the valves to make sure everything was in good shape. Cost only around $75.00 per head, but well worth it.

I hope you have better luck this time around.
