Finally done: lift and tires!

hey ark. What was your main reason for going with the skinnier tires? Was it the weight difference for mpg? Also do you know what the weight of these tires are vs. stockers?

Main reasons:
1) Less affect on gas mileage
2) It's taller than the 265/70
3) Narrower tires perform better for a lot of my uses
4) Most tires are cheaper in a 255/70 size
The influece came from CJ3Flyr. He had a thread on the size, and the info from that thread helped make the decision. Here is his thread on the size.

No idea on the weight, I tried to find it before making my purchase on the Hankooks and never could.

so what kind of mileage are you getting currently?

Before I say my mileage, let me say that my last vehicle was a modded 96 Mustang Cobra, and I developed a pretty heavy foot. I didn't keep detailed records before the lift/tires, but I got somewhere around 16-16.5. I am now getting about 17-17.5 average (corrected for change in tire size). That number is my avearage from the last seven months. My highest was around 19, lowest around 15 mpg (a lot of towing).

Thanks for giving those numbers, I know they are different for every person, but that helps alot.

No problem. I have kept record of every fill up since 6/18/2010 though an app on my phone, and it will generate them quickly for me. Very interesting when you go back looking at them. The downside is that the average also includes quite a bit of time I spent during the summer towing a 18 ft. bass boat with a 150 hp motor, not sure on the weight but it killed my numbers. If I took an average strictly when unloaded, I would expect it to be about 1 mpg higher than it is. I should also note that probably 75% of my driving is highway.

excellent... 75% of my driving is highway as well. I think I'm deffinitely going this route when its time for new tires.

Tread style will still come into play, and not everyone has had the same results. However, most I've seen with the 255/75's have had less of a negative impact than those who went with 265/70's.

Anybody only install the front FJ springs and leave the back stock?

I think ARK may have done so??

I really am only interested in raising the front an inch or so and would like to do so with springs instead of the adjustable Bilsteins. I think the rear height is high enough already and I don't want the rear FJ springs to give me another 1/2 to 1 inch lift in the rear (I have the V6 and it's 2WD).

Are there any issues with ride quality having the FJ springs in the front and the 4Runner springs in the rear? Shocks would be same type as the front struts.

You're correct, I did front springs only. However, the ONLY reason I did this is because I do not have springs in the rear, I have air bags. You *shouldn't* get any more than .5" in the rear. Some have, but very few. I can notice a definite difference in ride quality front/rear. I wouldn't do this unless I was going to do them all around. In all honesty, 1/2" is hardly noticeable. I'd go for it, but that's just me.
