Finally Joined the 315's Club

After running several sets of 285's over that last 6 years I finally made the jump to 315's, getting a set of 315/75/R16 BFG KM2s mounted about 6 weeks ago. I also added some top-out spacers while I was at it, as the 883s were only giving me about 2.5" of lift with all the weight up front. After about 1500 miles here are my thoughts:
-The tires themselves are awesome, much quieter than my old MTZs and much smoother going down the road (still a mud terrain though)
-I've done minimal off-roading since I've been tied up with school pretty heavily, but from what I can tell they'll be great for what I do. Rubbing is minimal, mostly at full lock and when flexing - some additional trimming will most likely be done though.
-Going from 285s to 315s isn't quite as big a jump as some people have made it out to be. I've got 4.30s in the rear with the 2000 Limited with e-locker, power loss didn't go completely unnoticed but it hasn't bothered me at all (keep in mind central and eastern North Carolina are pretty flat).
-The tires look bigger than 285s without a doubt but don't look absurdly big, with a 2.5 to 3 inch suspension lift and a 2" body lift they look much more proportional to the rest of the car, the 285s just look too small.
-With 4" backspacing on AR Teflon rims, you can clear stock A-arms by about 3/4" without any aftermarket spacers.
-RPMs are down between 200-300 at different highway speeds compared to 285s, my speedometer is off about 8 mph when I'm going 70.
-Gas mileage has actually increased slightly, which I think is purely a result of changing to a more road friendly tread design
Enough talk, here are some pics after I washed and waxed the 4runner this past weekend:

Looks awesome!! Your rig is one of my favorite 3rd gens! I love the exhaust tip through the rear bumper, looks insanely sweet!! :bravo:

wow your truck is super clean, defiantly one of my top favs on here, that CBI looks sick on the rear especially with the tip coming out of it! Looks Great

Everything looks really nice man. Big tires are the way to go. Both bumpers are looking good.

What RPM are you at running 70 on the highway?

Thanks for the compliments guys, think I'm finally done with the 4runner (said that one before!) - just planning to enjoy it for a while. I'm running a little over 2000 RPMs at 70, down from closer to 2300. The rear CBI might be my favorite overall mod, can't say enough good things about those guys. My goal with the 4runner was to build a capable, clean, armored rig that flowed well and wasn't overdone. I'm really happy with the way everything has turned out, might do a few things different if I started today because there are some new options with front bumpers, etc. but overall I'm pumped and very proud of it!

my front end has sagged a tad with the 883 due to the front armor and skid. I've been thinking of adding the top plate spacers but didn't want it affecting my cv-angles. You mind snagging a pic of yours? I'm right there with everyone else in saying the truck looks good. I wish I would have put my bl on first before I bought brand new 285s few months back, cus now knowing I have plenty room for them, I want some.

Wow, that is one of the cleanest looking 4runners ive ever seen, i love what youve done with it and those 315s look perfect on it.

wow that is badass man nice rig but you need some 1.5 wheel spacer asap lol

I used to run 1.5" wheel spacers when I had the stock 5 stars and 285 MTR's. After going no wheel spacers to wheels spacers and then back to the AR rims without wheel spacers in my opinion wheel spacers make the front end ride terrible. There was a lot more steering wheel vibration, especially at highway speeds, and the whole front end just felt wobbly. I know some on here run them and like them just fine, but I don't plan to go down that road again.

Thanks! I added the Toytec 1/2" topouts, which gave me about 3/4" of lift. You can get an idea of my CV angles in the straight on picture, increased some but I've only got 2 of the fins actually touching so not too bad. I don't have a camera up at school, but I'll try to take a pic of the CVs next time I'm home. You could always sell the 285s on Craigslist and pick up a set of 315s, I've have pretty good luck selling used tires and Discount Tire Direct has awesome prices with free shipping.

How MPG in city?, are u plan regear later to 4:88

I'm getting between 17-18 on the highway and closer to 13 in the city. I've got a Garmin GPS that I use now as my speedometer and odometer, so I've been checking gas mileage through that which should be pretty accurate. Honestly I probably won't ever re-gear, I only drive about 10,000 miles a year and the change in power really hasn't bothered me. Again, I've got 4.30s and just had the engine rebuilt last year, so both of those things are working in my favor as far as turning the 315s goes.

Jeebus, I just checked my first full tank refill from 100% city stop & go traffic and I only got 12.8mpg and that is after a full fluid change to 100% synthetic.

I have stock 2002 Sport Edition gears which is 4:10 running comparatively tiny size tires of 255/75R-17, and I do not have a roof rack either.
I checked it without using my GPS but even if I added the 3% it is something like 13.2mpg.
We are also basically driving in the same area ( I am in North Raleigh) so that should not be a factor.

I think I need to run some Lucas gas treatment and maybe some Amsoil PI through a few tanks to clean it out or something, you are getting as good or better MPG than I am with a roof rack, heavier bumpers, much larger & heavier tires.

Your 4Runner looks outstanding.
