Thanks for all the help and input guys in my search for a 4R. I think my search might be over. Possibly picking up a 98 all stock desert dune tonight as long as it is as advertised. Paying a bit more than I wanted to considering it will need the TB service soon, but sometime's the price of getting rid of a headache (i.e. 4 month search) is worth it.

Possibly buying? Shouldn't you have made a thread AFTER you bought the 4 Runner? That way we could congratulate or make fun of the deal you got a lil' better.:jaw drop:

I know how you feel although I was only looking for about 2 weeks for mine but it seemed like forever and also seemed like absolutely nothing was going to come up for sale anywhere near my area that was worth a darn.

Everyone that I checked out for 2 weeks was absolutely trashed, was like wild animals owned them.
The one I found was in great shape in & out and WAY better than I had ever hoped for.

So wait. ToyotaOwners service records pulls it up as desert dune and that's what it looks like to me. I thought silver came in later years?

Have tried my damnest to get the guy below $5700 but no luck. He is at least throwing in some brand new maintenance items (bushings, tie rod ends, even 2 Toyota O2 sensors)

It's an inside joke to poke at someone. One of the Desert Dune owners hates when people call it Silver, so we do our best to "double check" the color... lol :)

It looks good, but we haven't heard much on mileage and such. Any more details?
 
LOL yea I saw that post, too funny.

Mileage is 159K. Looks really clean inside and out. 2 owners. Runs well, nothing stood out unusual. Has most of the service records from previous owners and himself. New drive belts, shocks and mounts and synthetic oil every 5k (receipts). Including a new in box K&N intake (which I will prob resell), sway bar links and bushings, and tie rods ends as mentioned above. It will need its second timing belt very soon :(

Oh and transmission fluid flushed, coolant flushed, PCV valve and fuel filter within the last 18 months.

Well picked it up last night! Managed to talk him down some because the truck def needs some maintenance. The 1st owner did a great job with maintenance and record keeping even a gas mileage log which he passed on to me. Now this owner on the other hand...not so much. Guy is in army and been deployed for a couple years and wife knew nothing about maintenance other than tires and oil changes. So I'm excited yet a bit nervous and trying not to be intimidated due to ideas of trying to do most of this myself (I'm no mechanic!). Here is what I initially think:

1. Ball joints - thanks to this forum I looked at them closely during inspection and they look worn and see some grease leakage. May replace other suspension items while in there (MIGHT just do lift since I'm replacing stuff). I think this is the culprit for the "hopping" around feel driving around.

2. Timing belt/WP service (will probably out source this)

3. General stuff like plugs, wires, trans cooler (will do this asap since I already have it), fluids, etc.

4. Valve cover gaskets. It was obvious these had been leaking for a while and is my most intimidating job. I degreased and cleaned it up quite a bit then tightened the covers down. All the bolts were several ratchet turns loose so hoping this will buy me some time.

I am sure there are a lot of things that I will find once I really get into it and know my initial costs/time may be high but in the end I'm confident that I will get another 160k out of it!

By the way, is there an easy and clean way to remove the pin striping? Think it is a little hideous on this particular truck.
