I know these boards get spammed with these "im looking at buying this 4runner" threads but i have two specific questions that i couldnt find in any existing discussions i've searched thru. Ive driven a friends 4runner ages ago and have to say ive been in love ever since. its just about time for me to bite the bullet and get rid of my old rig

im looking at a few first gen runners and just need to know what areas on the frame are problematic and easily checkable so im not taking the whole body apart checking for rust on the frame. i know about the fenders and to see if its spreading but anyhwere else ???

on the one im seriously considering the inside carpet is pretty ugly aswell and the add said it includes a new full interior. how difficult is it to install interior as i have never done any carpet/uphostery work befor

The rust prone areas are anywhere the frame turns upward from horizontal, and above the rear wheels. Especially where the fuel tank sits against the frame. Also check all the body mounts.

The key thing is the frames rust from the inside out, so it's not noticeable until it's really bad. You have to get underneath and tap every sq in with something to find any bad spots.

It would help to know what part of the country you are in and where the truck spent most of its life. That would help to know if they salt the roads, or hit the beach a lot...salt = rust.

I know from personal experience....
check under the battery tray, if it has a sunroof, check the front door "A" pillars, open the little cargo doors in back, check with a flashlight in there for rust or signs of rust repair.

Interior is easy to remove. Take out seats ( If memory serves, 14mm bolts )
Carpet is easy to remove and replace.

Panels are easy, especially if you have automotive trim removal tools ( cheap at harbor frieght )

i live in coastal BC so rust is a very big problem for sure. i was hoping to not have to go over the entire frame but it seems like thats definatly the only way of insuring im getting somehting that is worth working on

im taking a look at it in a week ill let you all know how it goes
