First Beach Ride

Took my first beach ride yesterday. East Beach in Charlestown, RI. You can only drive directly on the beach starting in the fall so you don't interfere with the breeding of the Piping Plovers. We're very environmentally responsible here.

You have to drive on the sand beach trails and there are plenty of parking spots that allow you access to the beach on one side and the salt pond in the other. The salt pond offers some great kayaking and clamming.

The pictures don't do the trails justice. The sand is super fine and super soft and about a foot deep in most places. At some of the trail intersections it's well over a foot deep. I aired down to 20psi and disabled all traction and stability control. I took the advice from an earlier post of mine where a lifeguard with 9 years experience driving on the beach said to disable all traction aids. I wanted to try it both ways to see the difference but I didn't wanna risk getting stuck. I got through no problem and just stayed on the gas and built up some speed to blast through the really deep spots at the intersections. The 4Runner did great though and I never felt as though I was going to get stuck.

I'm gonna come back soon with my grill and my kayaks.

Redsox1918; Im on that beach all the time in the fall. I've been driving it since I got my license in "74" I stay away in the summer because of the arrse hats in AWD's getting stuck. Those stock tires really suck on the beach.
The ones that came standard issue with my 2014 trail premium would fill with sand, and I would slide all over the beach with em' and not stay in the ruts. We air ours down to 15 and disable all of the added fluff. Ya' really have to power thru the beginning or else you'll get stuck. Once the beach face opens, be careful down by the breach way as at times of the year it can turn to sugar really quick. Out of all the beach vehicles I've had over the years I can defiantly say the runner is far above the rest I've owned.

Really?? I didn't have a problem with them. Not sure what a better option would be. Anything more aggressive will just make it easier to dig down.

No issue's on the soft "backtrack entrance". Once the beach face opened though, they would fill with sand and "SLIDE" all over the place. After 15,000 on the stock one we went with the TRO wheels and Dueller APT 2's which I have had on a lot of my past 4X4's with no issues on the beach, mud or snow.
If you like the stock I have an original set of 4 tires wheels and sensors cheap. Only 15000 miles.

Be sure and get your permit ahead of time online. Otherwise you have to go to a visitor's center, watch a video and wait.

Confession: I have not driven in Hatteras since they started the permits. There was talk of getting me a year long permit but I didn't receive that gift yet...

I air down to 18psi with no issues.

This is Corolla Beach right by Carova. I hate carrying stuff through the sand from a hot a$$ parking lot so I drive an extra 45 min to OBX vs Virginia Beach.

We used to go down South 12 to Oregon Inlet till they started charging. I paid for the first two years but wasn't able to use it enough to justify the $150. Plus, the beach driving area got smaller.

Those gear requirements can come in handy. From the mandate:

(v) The vehicle must carry a lowpressure
tire gauge, shovel, jack, and
jack support board.

In addition a tow strap (no metal hooks or chain, just a cloth strap with cloth loops) can be handy if you get stuck and a person offers to help but has no strap. Why no metal? If the strap breaks the metal or chain can become a deadly missile. I also carry a 2nd jack and support board. Used to support opposite side of vehicle from a flat (so it doesn't sink into soft sand as the flat side is raised).

Didn't mean to cast a bad light on it, just meant to say it's more attractive because you don't have hoops to jump through that have been set by different groups.

It's common sense to carry recovery gear and other things.

Nope, I'm good. I just wanted to make the point to others reading that the stock tires are just fine for driving on sand when aired down properly.

Went to Corolla a few months ago. Trying to head back out there or further south this weekend. Aired down to 25 PSI and didn't have any issues.

We were determined to find those Corolla horses and finally found them in that part of the beach. Just keep going north until you see a bunch of houses. There are marked exits to access that area.

If we make it down there this weekend, I'll take a few pics.

Will be doing it for my first time next month at the OBX (Corolla, specifically). Might ride down to Hatteras if I get a wild inkling, but they require a permit. Corolla's beach driving is technically a state road, so no permit and no gear requirements mandated by the authorities.

Enjoy dodging the tards at the head of the entrance that get stuck there with their little cars.

I thought it would be the dummies with 3/4 ton pickups on 35s who don't know to air down. Maybe I'll be blessed and deal with a little of both.
