First car

Hi there, I'm a high schooler in COS and I'm looking for my first car! The 1st Gen 4Runners caught my eye because I'm looking for a good sized AWD to get me around town, up trough the mountains and doing some light off roading, with friends and equipment. The 4Runners look like reliable, fun cars, and the removable roof really appeals to me.

As a first time buyer in basically any car, what are some things I should start looking for?

Hello and welcome to the forum! If you do go for a 4Runner for your first vehicle, be VERY CAREFUL while you learn its handling--these trucks have a high center of gravity over a narrow chassis, and can become very unstable if you don't respect this aspect. They ARE very fun vehicles, and can give you many good times--they sit high for good visibility, good ground clearance to keep from dragging on things, and if you get the fourwheeling bug, they can go a LOT of places cars can't. I would suggest getting in touch with FootofGod and SVDude--they are in your area, and would probably be glad to help you check over a potential purchase. Check out the "Classic T4R's" section for more info on older rigs. Best of luck!

We would be happy to help. There is an area West of I-25 and North of Academy on B Street that is great for learning about off road, but stay out of the mud. My dughter is a Freshman this year and I'm just teaching her how to drive the Runner.

The easy thing to look at is frame rot. Down in the south here rust will eat up just about everything, don't know how bad it is around you. Check and make sure there are no wide holes or cracks anywhere along the frame rails. It's important to have a good foundation to build on.
