Hello all

We have a 97 4runner. recently the a/c has been acting up. Usually when you start the car and drive the a/c works prefectly fine for about 5-10 minutes and then it will just stop cooling. It is like he compressor disengages and stops cooling. When it works the compressor is running and all the lines are ice cold where they should be. then when it shits off the compressor is not engaged. Usually if you turn the car completely off and then onn again it will work again for a short while. I dont know what to look for next. Anyone have any ideas?

I believe that your a/c compressor would have the same type of magnetic clutch as my 2002 does. (so the compressor pulley is always turning with the engine, but the clutch engages when the a/c button is pressed, so the compressor internals then start to turn.) If you're magnetic clutch is starting to go bad, you could get the problem you're describing.

I was going to say that you should get your system checked to make sure that it's got enough refrigerant, but you said it gets cold sometimes, so that's probably not the issue. (maybe it could be, though... if you don't have enough refrigerant in there, then you would simply be compressing air some of the time, which doesn't get overly cold at those pressures.)

Good luck.
