First Run.... thoughts? thinking Cleghorn

Hi all,

Looking to do my first off-road run... I got a TEP w/ 5100's at 1.75 front and 1" spacer rear lift and 275 KO2's.

Based on my lurking of upcoming runs in the SoCal section over the past few months, it looks like Cleghorn (with no off-shoots), would maybe be my best bet.

Couple of questions: instead of waiting for the next run, is this safe to do alone? I have zero experience. If not Cleghorn what are some other VERY easy runs I can do to get my feet wet?

Anyone want to come with me?:laugh:

Never been to cleghorn so I don't know how difficult it is if you avoid offshoots but I do know people tend to have bad luck there. If you don't have people who know the area with you, you might accidentally turn off onto one of the longer offshoots without realizing and get in some trouble.

If you're really intent on going alone (not really recommended) I would say go to Big Bear when its dry if you don't mind the extra drive. I learned how to offroad by myself there when I was 16 and didn't have any issues as its very easy and a great place to learn. Also, depending on the day you want to go, I can ride shot gun with you and give pointers. Could possibly even get my friend to come with in his runner as back up as well

I'll go to Cleghorn with you, it's very easy and there's plenty of bypasses.

My first trail run was Cleghorn.. Stay off the offshoots and you'll be fine for the most part.... I even did one and was fine, little challenging but fine..

Some nice views too

Just make sure no rain, you dont want to dig into the dirt.

Even I 3-wheeled it on that one haha. Love it.

What exactly are you trying to do? Cleghorn is fire road with offshoots of some pretty fun stuff. Could get hairy if your first time. If you just want to get in the dirt maybe lytle creek (not sure if it's open yet) or even holy Jim canyon?

I personally wouldn't do much alone even with experience. That's just me. It's funner with others and no matter how easy of something goes wrong. It can get real bad real quick!

Cleghorn wouldn't be bad to do alone but you never know what will happen. It is always good to go with someone else. Just post up when you want to do the run and I am sure you will get a couple guys who would love to join.

On that note I'm headed out to Joshua tree Friday till Sunday if anyone wants to come. Never been so we will see how it goes. I would love to tell you it's great for first timers but I don't have a clue!

Here's one of the offshoots in cleghorn

Hey at least you were able to turn around and go back!! Some of them you better hope the person behind you can pull or winch you out

FORErunner911 if you do decide to go yourself. You could make it real easy and simple. When you exit and make a right and start up on the cleghorn trail. Keep going until you get to a flat area with a power tower to your left and you can sit and play there for awhile going up and down the rutted slope to get a feel I guess ? And if any thing happens you can always hike back down to get help if you have no service or don't see anyone else up there. That would be super easy. Where at in so cal are you?

Cleghorn is very doable for your first time! Cleghorn was my first time going offroad with the socal group and it was super fun! I didn't do any of the hard offshoots as I was completely stock. It's a great way to learn from the pros!

Be sure to air your tires down, and to have a portable compressor to air them back up when you're finished. I didn't have anything my first time so I borrowed everything from everyone else.

I tried Lytle creek like 2 weeks ago and it was closed from the fires still :(
