first time changing oil pan gasket..needs help

I did my oil pan gasket, it helped, wasn't the main cause though. My pcv line was clogged and causing too much pressure and pushing my newly replaced rear main out, the only one was caked in enough to not cause issues.

Oil pan gasket wasn't too bad, I would disconnect the mount to the cross member, only way I could get it out. Unfortunately when I put the pan back in I somehow pinched the dip stick, so I get to do it again. Make sure you pull your dip stick before doing it!

To do the Oil pan, you have to pull the front diff. There's not a ton to do to pul it, it's just a PIA to maneuver it from between the frame and the engine. I use a jack to lift the engine up a little, basically just taking the weight off the motor mounts. That extra little bit of room helps.

I put a block of wood under the front sump of the oil pan and lift it. Like I said, you only lift it just a hair, just take the weight off the motor mounts. But that little bit was just enough to slide the diff out.

So I have a 2006 V6 Sport with 170K that is showing a leak near the lower oil pan. I cleaned it up with brake cleaner and have been watching it closely. The leak is small and steady, more on the drivers side and I have not needed to add any oil yet. My thought is to go ahead and replace the gasket on the lower pan as it does seem to be degraded.

After reading this thread I will also do some homework on the valve cover gaskets and oil cooler o-rings and will try the foot spray trick (awesome idea BTW).

So my questions:
1) Am I correct in understanding there is no OEM replacement for the gasket and that I should get FIPG rather than buying a gasket from pepboys or amazon.
2) The lower pan seems pretty easy to get to without dealing with the differential which I believe to be an issue for the main pan not the lower pan correct?
3) If I can get to the lower pan is there anything else I should do/change/clean while under there?

I plan to keep this truck for as long as possible, so if there are recommendations for preventative replacements I am all ears. I have spent more time this lsst year off-roading which translates to being more and more interested in learning how to fix or at least diagnose on my own. I really appreciate both the experience on this forum and the willingness to share!

If you have a 2006 then the stuff you read in this thread was likely not applicable since this is the 3rd gen section....

If you actually have a 2006, than you are in the wrong forum. This is 3rd gen 96-02 4R, I would post in the 4th gen section.
