First time using 4 runner in snow, lots of beeping and clicking going on

So we got our first snow of the year in Massachusetts this weekend, and this is the first time i took my 06 4RUNNER out in the snow. I thought I would leave it in 2 whell drive to have a little fun, but to my dismay, the truck would not even move.

When on a slippery surface, if you hit the gas and the tires spin, I hear all this clicking from some sort of electricial component and the engine just goes back to idle, and the truck will not move.

Does anyone know if this is operating correctly? when i put it in 4 wheel drive, everything is great, goes amazing, but are you telling me that I cannot go to a parking lot, or a sand pit keep it in 2 wheel dirve and do doughnuts?

I understand the concept, but how can they design an SUV that you cant rip around and spray sand and mud everywhere... WTF?

Anyway, let me know if this sounds like it is operating correctly.

Sounds about right. Some 4runners have the VSC off button, I don't have that and I'm assuming you don't either (not sure if it just a sport thing or if it's just a newer option). The only time traction control is off is when you are in 4LO with the center diff locked. I believe there is a way to override but I don't know how to do it. Makes for a safe truck and it catches you when you least expect it but I agree, I'd like to rip donuts every once in a while.

The concept is great, but I find VSC and stuff and the effect of dead stop to be really annoying when I'm making a quick turn right and I hit a pile of snow and I want to have some fun, but the computer says no way jose and basically kills all power.

The way I explained to my wife was:

Couple of beeps-"It's slippery but no worries I got your back"
Bunch of Beeps -'Either it's super sliperry or you're driving like a dumbass"
Constant Beeps -"Way to go dumbass, we're ALL GOING TO DIE!"

when I lock the center diff while in 4HI, my VSC turns off.

But correct me if I am wrong, ATRAC is still "turned on". I locked my center diff yesterday on a snow packed road, VSC turned off, then I romped on it, and it broke free a little more than with VSC on, but I could feel ATRAC still applying the ABS to the slipping wheels, etc.

I love that when it happens. I was having a blast this morning with fresh powder of snow and scaring off those peeps (who don't know how to drive)trying to get to work. HAHAHA....

The 2wd guys have a switch, the '08 and newer models have a switch. The rest of us 4th gen guys have to mod or lock the center diff in 4wd.
