So I took the family and cousin fishing yesterday(freshwater) and realized I need a better plan for transporting 4-6 rods and reels. Anyone have a tube they like or DIY suggestion?

Take a look at this thread and you will see a photo of my cooler/rod racks. The rear is a DIY. A Hitch Haul with their Z-Bar to get height.
Basket is from perforated angle iron, bolted to the H-H platform, and pole holders are PVC pipe, held on by U shaped pipe hangers with a bolt thru the bottom for rod butt
to rest on, all available at any hardware store.

I'd make one out of PVC if you want something up on the roof. One tube, two caps. Bit of foam glued in on each end. Should be good to go.
I've taken to a loop of mono on the rear hook in the trunk, and one on the back seat oh-shit handle. Can snake a rod or two in there and they hang out of the way. Wouldn't want to put a ton of them in there, but it works when I'm out by myself or with one other person. Definitely not the most off-road friendly, but it is fine for roads I've found.

My last truck I had them all inside and inevitably I hooked the liner and tore a hole. Not doing that again this time so it’s either I set everything up when I get there or stick it on the rack. Saw a lot of PVC tubes but I guess is has to be big enough to fit the reel. What’s yours look like.

I've been using these Nite Ize gear lines to transport rods and I've been pretty satisfied. They come with a bunch of carabiners which I use to secure the rods from moving around. You could hold 4-5 easily. Not as convenient as the rod tubes but you cant really fit more than 1-2 poles in those, depending on what kind of rods your using.

I'm a huge fisherman and I go with friends a lot so its not uncommon for me to carry 6 or more poles so I had to find a more secured and reliable way of transporting the poles without too much work securing them. This is my set up right now. This set up allows me to carry 10 poles.
This is what I am using: ROD-UP for SUVs, Passenger Vans and Wagons #RUPC
I bought the truck version and ended up cutting the tube to make it fit nice and flush to the headliner. I also had to modify the bracket and drill some new holes as well but I've used it a few times already and loading and unloading is a breeze and they are very secured.

This is awesome. You have the second arm mounted to the front passenger seat?
Like I said, I just use the mono in the car. I haven't caught the liner yet, but will definitely be careful about that in the future.
If I were to build one, I'd mimic something liek this.
Would be tough to get 6 of them in one tube though. You could always use a ski rack.

Yes, it comes with the tip holder which is mounted to the driver seat headrest since my passengers do recline when riding shotgun. The price may deter some but for me, this was perfect for my needs since the window mount version sits to low for my liking and I'm also running the molle panels on both sides as well.

Only about $20 this might be the way to go. I am having a fishing pole issue my self I need to get solved.

If you look close at the view in the fog light thread you will see plastic covered cables wrapped around the PVC rod holders. They have locks on them that are used to lock the rods to the rack to keep a snatch and go thief at bay. Coolers are likewise cable locked to the rack and locking hitch pins are used to lock the racks to the receiver. Cables locked tight over the cooler lids prevent theft of adult beverages in the cooler.

I watched a YouTube video using schedule 20 pvc which should be wide enough and then cap both ends. Should allow one to put the rod and reel into the tube. Don’t think Home Depot carries it so I need to find a plumbing supply store.

I think this is what I need to do. I have to park in a garage which doesn't accommodate my Titan vault
Are you still happy with this set up? Any reason you got the truck version and not the SUV? I really like how the back is flush to the ceiling, any chance you could expand on how you did that?Cheers!

How does it do on the headrest mount? Pretty solid?:wave:
Curious if you run a 6'6" pole like seen mounted is it up in your face in front? I run 8 footers a lot (2 piece) so those should be easy... the 6'6" are solid one piecers
