Holy crap, I am totally doing that this weekend. The Yakima ones that I have clamp down and have like a rubber liner across, that would be perfect for my 9" fly rods.

I know it is pricey (1) of my rods costs that much and thats without the reel.
Mine go in ski racks. How people put it inside half bent with the possibility of hitting their windshield is beyond me. Must shop for rods at WalMart.

Sorry boys, I don't get on here much any more unless someone sends me a message and i happen to check my notifications but here are some pictures for those who were asking about the set up.
Flipped the truck mounting bracket upside down and drilled a hole and mounted it OEM hanger. For my application, I decided to use the truck mounts since I run the Rago panels in the back on both sides so there was no where I could mount the suction cup and if you want to get it up as close as you can to the headliner, I think this is the only way to do it.
Another shotof how it is mounted.
Side shot of the truck mounting bracket upside down. Its hard to see but I had to bend my brackets a little bit so they wouldn't make contact with my molle panels.
What you see from the back. Everything is mounted the same as you would if you were mounting it in a truck expect for the brackets. Those gets turned upside down and a hole needs to be drilled. I recommend using a step bit for this and drill until the hole is the right size.
Less than 2 fingers worth of space between the rack and headliner
My advice for doing this would be to take everything apart and mock everything up before you start drilling and cutting. The bar in the middle that connects the 2 pieces that holds the rods was cut. If i recall correctly, i cut about 12 inches off but I suggest making small cuts until you get the right length.
As for some of the questions in regards to pole length, I have poles the vary in size from 6'-7' and they fit fine. The attachment that attaches to the headrest works for the most part but I have issues with it coming loose so I just push the headset all the way down to hold it in place. There are tension screws that are suppose to "bite" down on the headrest poles but they don't do a good job so that would be my only gripe about the whole set up. The poles pretty solid and don't move around at all and to my surprise, the poles are out of the way even with with a passenger in the middle given they aren't are giant but my car only carries 3 people anyways so that's never been a problem for me.

Dang... I wish I saw this sooner, it would have saved me some time. I made this holder and it's kinda similar but different. I wanted something that held the rods close as possible to the roof.

I was just looking at the Yakima TopWater today, saw it mentioned in a magazine. Plenty of reviews out there for you to research, and complaints, too.
YMMV... I just thought I would mention it for anyone that it might be a good fit for. Looks like a real good idea, some details maybe be less than great.

JKaber - thanks for posting that. I went with the Ultimate Rod Case. Earl is awesome to deal with -- answered all my questions.
For me, the problem with the Yakima is only my son's 8' fly rod would fit. The Ultimate Rod Case was the best solution I could find that easily fit my 9' rods as well as my 10' and 10'6 nymphing rod. 4 rods ready to go.
