Does anyone have a good recommendation for an attachment to carry 2-4 fishing rods/reels on the factory rack? The Thule setup is not an option with the 4Runner Rack. Anyone have it/try it?

We hit the MV Derby last week and had a blast on the sand and roads. Just need a system to carry out gear without having to break it down each time.

Thanks,
Pete

I thought the Thule Castaway would fit the 4Runner factory cross bars, are the factory cross bars too wide for the clamps included? I have only seen the castaway on top of passing cars, haven't seen one up close.

Other setups I have seen besides the Thule Castaway is PVC pipe for more protection , they have screw in caps on both sides and you can insert a rod from each side, The PVC is then bolted or strapped to the factory rack. I have seen some nice setups when the PVC is painted so it doesn't look like you are the local plumber and you can put them on or off pretty quickly.

Some other production ones I have seen as well.

These are magnetic and can be popped on and off.

and homemade setups similar to what this guy did.

Thanks for the reply Bucky.

The Castaway was my first choice, but when I put the make/model into the selector it doesn't come up as an option. Kind of pricey too.

The Rodmount link you posted looks like a good bet.

Do you run any of these setups? I was hoping for someone who found a system that works well.

Thanks,
Pete

I use a thule ski rack for my surf rods. Thule sells a universal 'fat mouth' mounting kit for 35-40 that should fit any ski rack system on the 4runner. Good Luck.

Just like Kimboy posted I have only used my Yakima Ski rack for carrying rods. I use this when I am running short distances to the river, lake etc. I have thought about rigging up a PVC option but I have not done so to date.
