Fishtailed

Follow up on this issue. I replaced the tires today. The post above was my only fishtail, but I was spinning the tires regularly from a stop. The streets are wet here in Seattle and I live on top of a giant hill, probably 500 vertical feet of gain over a 1/4 mile. Virtually every time I started up it from that direction I'd spin tires, especially if it was wet. I sometimes turned traction control off just to amuse myself, but it happened to my wife and we have some travel coming up, so I felt like I needed to address it.

Put some new Cooper AT3 4S on today. Light rain and I couldn't get the wheels to spin, even with traction control off. I didn't come up from that same direction, which will be the ultimate test, but it feels like problem solved, plus I have snow rated AT tires on now, which is appropriate for the vehicle and better on forestry roads and mountain passes, which is not daily for me, but not uncommon either.

I would warn people off of those particular Yokohamas, not that I've seen anyone express interest in them. Maybe someone will search for them some day, find this post and save themselves some pain.

Those tires have only the white lettering outline? Or is it possible for blackwall only? The white letter outline bothers me, but the tires seem so good, I may just let that pass.
 
Mine does this all the time, but the traction control catches it just as fast as I can whip the wheel around and straighten it out.

I've never had the ass get out from under me in rain.

Those tires are good in rain but will break loose in the conditions you describe if you have a snow/ice pack. IOW, a slick ice or hard pack snow base with new snow on top.

I've had mine slip out a few times in recent snow. Now these are streets not trails. Surprisingly easy to get the rear to break.... Although I can say I had my 3rd row seats removed and an empty gas tank. I've added weight back there again now and I would expect with a tank of gas too it would help a lot. I was about 200lbs light over the rear wheels. also air pressure was on the high side.

No issues with rain though.
 
RWD vehicles don't have the safety net of FWD vehicles or AWD vehicles in rain or snow. It's not the tires or the vehicle, its usually driver experience.

I use to Daily commute in a RWD sports car, and i learned real quick how to drive in the rain. Basically, if you make any mistake in a RWD sports car in the rain, you will either spin out, hit a wall, or shit in your pants.... The 4runner drives no differently in the rain as any other RWD SUV out there...although I found driving heavier vehicles were easier to drive in the rain.

If you can't control a 4runner in the rain, and you still think its the vehicle at fault, then trade your 4runner in.......maybe a RAV4 or CRV is a better option for you.

I drove RWD cars for many years in northern snow conditions, one car even that had no traction control and an open diff until i put a detroit tru trac in it.

It's amazing anyone survived. I use to take my mustang to the ski slopes in the north east all the time. Only traction control was the gas, clutch and 5spd gearbox. Amazing how you can "drive with the rear axle" with the proper amount of applied torque. Sometimes I miss driving, seems like all cars do today is commute.

Have them mounted with the lettering on the inside. Most tires can be mounted that way. White letters have bothered me since the '60s - along with white sidewalls. :)

And remember... Don't put that tire shine stuff on the treads. It's silicone and it's very, very slippery.
 
I grew up bombing down dirt roads in the Mojave desert as a kid, doing power slides and taking turns as fast as we could in old Toyota pickups. We didn't have traction control or any safety features, mostly bald tires and stupidity, but it was fun.

These trucks are SO gutless I didn’t think it was possible to fish tail.

I have intentionally turned off traction control and tried to hooligan it up in fresh rain and got very little, (no) action.

Disclosure: My other vehicles have more than twice the HP and Torque of the T4R and I drove RWD cars for many years in northern snow conditions, one car even that had no traction control and an open diff until i put a detroit tru trac in it. hiding:

If you did have an unexpected problem, I think you are on the right track to think about replacing the tires.
What other vehicles do you have, that have 600 HP and 600 FT-LBS?

The VW Bug was one RWD car that did well in the snow, or at least better than pick up trucks. It had the advantage of the weight of the rear engine an transaxle on the rear wheels.

People these days never really learn how to drive and control cars. They keep throwing tech at them like traction control and AWD which further takes them away from learning how to handle their cars.

I guess its similar to that recent Indonesian air crash of the brand new Boeing 737 Max plane where the pilots did not realize the sensors were telling them wrong information and they just flew it into the water. Back in the old days you paid attention to what your altimeter, horizon, etc.

Interesting stuff. I can spin the tires very easily on hills with old pavement here in Seattle. It's nearly impossible to start without a little slippage on those roads. New asphalt is quite the opposite. I run Wrangler Duratracs, and have no other issues with them. Maybe the 5th gens are better at this than the 4th. Always wondered if it was just our model that had this funky little quirk. All other systems work fine by the way. Glad your issue is solved. I'll keep spinnin'. Cheers.
 
Not sure where in Seattle you are, but I'll come up Dravus today and see what happens. I've never done so in this vehicle, in this weather without spinning, (but have never had it happen in any other car). If it doesn't happen today, then the tires are the difference.

Right. The thing is, I got my driver's license originally in 1982, though I had been driving ranch trucks and tractors for years before then. My first automatic transmission was 1999.

There is a 4th Generation 4Runner in my family that I've driven a fair bit, but my 2013 is the first one that I have personally owned. This spinning and sliding behavior is abnormal, based on my experience and if I can solve it with a decent (mid-priced) set of tires...say what you will.

Wow, you guys make a lot of assumptions. I've owned an MGB, 2 vintange Mustangs and a '76 Porsche 911. Even had some autocross and track days. Get a CRV or LEARN2DRIVE you say?

I had a shitty set of tires come with my used truck and I guess I learned something about posting in this community.

I'm over by Children's Hospital. 55th st heading up to a stop light, the truck can totally spin (the wheels) from a stop when sitting on the slope waiting for the light. Not gunning it, just trying to move forward. My 3rd gen never did this, and I've tried multiple psi settings. Made me wonder if there was something broke on my (4th gen) truck, but all the other systems work perfectly. My main thing here was, do the 5th gens not have this issue. Nothing more than that. I've adjusted to the issue and just live with it. Long winded, I know, but I've never really posted about this before.
 
Yep, my experience and observation too. I can control it, but it doesn't seem ideal. My original post was intended to get an idea of whether it was the tires that came on it or if it was characteristic of the vehicle.

My conclusion is that both were a factor, but as of this morning I can definitively say that the Cooper tires seem to have totally resolved it. Same streets, same conditions as before, the tires don't spin. And, I have tried to spin them just to see if I can and have not managed to yet. I'm sure it's possible, because some of it is a characteristic of the vehicle and to a degree RWD cars in general, but swapping tires made it a practical issue rather than unreasonable one.

I'm sure that this is not the only tire model that would have worked for me and I have no way of saying that they are the best, but I'm really happy with them. Knowing that I can count on them in the mountains is a plus too.
