Today I finally got time to open the hood. Replaced the PCV valve.
The valves were really raising he77. Now they sound normal - no whacking at all. The PCV valve was old and stuck open. That caused a vacuum leak which, in turn, caused the top end to over heat because the fuel/air mixture was WAY lean. You would swear I changed engines.
