Today I finally got time to open the hood. Replaced the PCV valve.

The valves were really raising he77. Now they sound normal - no whacking at all. The PCV valve was old and stuck open. That caused a vacuum leak which, in turn, caused the top end to over heat because the fuel/air mixture was WAY lean. You would swear I changed engines.

Best $3 I ever spent :reddance:

Great job!!.. Those grommets can go bad that the PCV goes in. They get really hard and can crack causing a vacuum leak as well. Glad to hear you got it running smoother.. :D
 
I'm almost at the point of stating that basically all the aux systems of a 4Runner really need to replaced. Most 3rd gens I'd venture to guess have around 250k on the odometer now and likely need a new suspension, rear axles/seals, vacuum hoses, coolant hoses, radiator(and possibly heater core), remanned/new fuel injectors, ignition system, and valve cover gaskets.

Its a bit crazy the money people want for these rigs given their age.

I was getting the dreaded 240 (bad cat) code. I disconnected the negative battery cable then shorted it to the positive for 2 minutes (did a computer reset). The truck started without the code.

IT'S STILL GONE! After about 30 srart-stops!

P0420 is the correct code for catalytic converter performance by the way.
 
If the cat is bad, the code will return. Mostly takes a few weeks sometimes to come back on. :]

had not heard of that procedure...I know its a big no no to short the positive to ground,
but ground to positive....hmmmm

cant the computer just be reset by disconnecting battery for 30 minutes ? Just asking

Correct.. Disconnect 30 minutes..I wouldn't short positive to ground nor ground to positive. Dead shorts not good. Supplying battery voltage to the grounds in any system may not end well. {Just my thought on the subject}
 
GM has a procedure known as a "Global Reset" where you take the negative and positive cables off the battery and hold them for 30 seconds then reattach them to battery. GM's logic is it discharges all remaining power from any capacitors in the system. I don't really agree or disagree with them, but they pay me to do it sometimes so I do it anyways. The only time you're really gonna have a bad time is if you reverse battery connections. There isn't any power flow if you have both battery cables on the same battery post.

Correct no complete circuit. I just wouldn't waste my time touching terminals together is why I wouldn't recommend it :D

Removing the negative terminal off the battery opens the circuits and everything is dead.. So I have no idea why GM would want to pull a positive too.{ Unless cleaning Terminals or replacing the battery}

It takes time for capacitors to drain. This is why the 30 min disconnect should do it..{unless the mfg says longer}
I guess they pay to you waste your time..:D {Well that's better then not paying you to waste your time. ;-}

Shorting the BATTERY is a big no-no! Shorting the battery CABLES kills the power stored in the computer, causing it to read it's program from the eprom and begin again, just as it did when the truck was new. All data is lost.

I do a computer reset every time I do almost anything to a computerized motor - from changing the air cleaner to rebuilding the motor. The PCV valve controls the vacuum, completely. Vacuum is measured and used by the computer for all kinds of things...

These 4Runners ECU's are so archaic they actually have no way to read vacuum. We only have a MAF sensor to read air flow, no MAP sensor.
