FJ CRUISER GRIP HANDLES install on a 2014+ T4R

FJ CRUISER GRIP HANDLES INSTALL Revision 1.0

The purpose of this write-up is to help people that are interested in installing FJ CRUISER GRIP HANDLES on their 2014+ Toyota 4Runner. I will list the parts used as well as pictures.

Remove OEM Handles, Install the steel 1/4-20 Steel Knurled Flanged Rivet Nut as shown with a rivet nut install tool. Mine came from Grainger. Grainger 1/4-20 Steel Rivet Nut Link If you don't have a Grainger, see the spec sheet for diameter of rivet nut as these fit the rectangular hole better than the smaller diameter ones.

LIST:
Part numbers of OEM Toyota & parts needed.

74603-35010-BO TOYOTA Grip Handles
1/4-20 Steel Rivet Nut (Rivnut)
Rivet Nuts installed (Mine are installed forward in the rectangular holes)
1/4-20 X 1 1/4" Stainless Cap Screws shown installed in the Rivet Nuts (for demonstration purposes only)
Handles bolted in with cap screw shown.
FJ Cruiser Grip Handles installed complete
Tool used: Westward Rivet NutGun
These are more secure like they should be. I was not satisfied with the nylon nuts for the fixture.

Hi. Excuse my ignorance, but what makes the FJ grip handles better than the ones that come stock on the 4Runner? I am always on the lookout for things I didn't know I needed until I see that someone else has them .

I just rather the ones like was on my FJ.....just personal preference.

EDIT: Changed my answers because I removed the nylon nuts and replaced them with steel rivnuts!

I have not done any weight test.

The one on the "A" Pillar is anchored with a bolt & welded nut in the "A" pillar.
I would have to say no to your question.

I don't / wouldn't use the OEM ones to use lifting aid like the one on the front passenger's pillar!

The one in the "A" pillar is the only one on our trucks that have a nut/screw fixture to my knowledge.
The other fixtures are rectangular holes with a metal spring type clip that is holding your overhead handles in place.

EDIT: This is as strong as one can make this fixture without having welded nuts in the overhead framework.
***I would definitely trust this as I trust the grip on the "A" Pillar.***

I have to say after a few days of seeing and using these FJ handles in the T4R, I consider this one of the Best Mods I have done so far on my 4Runner.
They are solid when I grab hold of them. I don't find they hinder or interfere with headspace.

My wife asked "why didn't they install these like on the FJ?"

The rear ones won't look as pretty because there is a third hole and the headliner is shaped to accommodate handles with hooks. I, for one, did not care much, and replaced them, too, when I was installing the 4th gen runner handles.

Yes, I installed all 4 without issue.

I don't know if it is a hole or just a marked pattern. I could more than likely take a nylon brush to that and make those markings disappear.

The rear OEM grips had a coat hanger hook made on them.
I saw the marking when I removed the handles but I too installed the FJ grips because the coat hanger hook is just about useless and I don't use those anyway.
Anyway, I prefer the FJ grips 200% over the T4R OEM ones!

Bringing this thread back up to throw in my 2 cents:

I had some extra grade 10 hardware and kayak grab handles laying around so I decided to try avoiding rivnuts. By partially pulling the headliner, I was able to sneak a washer and nylon lock nut up into the mounting point on the roof, and managed to get a 3/8 bolt up into there from the bottom. It was a very tight fit but I yelled at it until I got it to work. It's so solid I could probably use it as a recovery point if I really wanted to, I was able to hang almost my entire weight from it and it didn't budge at all. The only way it's coming off is if you rip the mounting point off the body. Overkill? Damn right it is :guitar3:

My Mom was just complaining about the lack of a grab handle on the A pillar of her new TRD OffRoad. I’m going to try & do this for her on her visit in June. I plan to do all 4, add the D-Rings to the back of the rears & I would like to try the washer route. Could you guys give me the Toyota Part #s?
