fj cruiser manual t case swap??

Does any one know of anyone who's swapped the manual shifting t case into a 4th gen 4runner. More specifically behind the auto 5spd that is mated to the v8 equipped 4runners. Im really wanting the reliabilty of the manual case, any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks guys!

I can't think of anyone that has done that swap on a 4th gen but at least a couple of people have done that swap on 2nd gen Tacomas, which are really similar to the 4th gen 4runner.

Didn't the GX470 come with a lever shifted case and V8? Maybe you could also use one from the 5th gen 4runner.

i cant find who it is but on marlin crawlers site in the gallery there is a photo of the inside of a 4th gen with a manual tcase and doubler. so it can be done, there is also a write up for the 2nd gen tacomas ill try and find. but it is pretty straight forward from what i remember. you take the shift sensors off your tcase and swap them over install on the tranny, cut the hole. then plug them in. then up in the cab you find the 4wd ecu and unplug it and short two wires to retain the proper 4wd lighting on the dash. what i dont know is if it disables the Atrac or not and or the DAC, or if it turns off vsc once this swap is done. but i plan to do this swap once the actuator seal on mine decides to go bad.

If someone does a manual t case swap in the 4runner there is a good chance that he has a lock up front.

Atrac and DAC are pretty useless IMO if you have a manual locker up front already.

I'm willing to give up Atrac for a Manual T case anyday.

It probably can be done, but you will need the 4WD ECU for the manual case from the FJ Cruiser (actually I was wrong earlier, the manual FJ uses a VF4B transfercase that's All-Time 4WD with no 2WD option, so no ADD on the front axle) as it will have different inputs from the manual transfercase to make things work. The only other issue I see if whether or not the 4WD ECU will communicate properly with the Skid Control ECU & Combination Meter. If it doesn't then you lose A-TRAC and other functionality that the 4th gen uses and/or the indicators may or may not work.

Does anyone know the differences between transmisions between the 6 and 8, or a good place to find that info? I was also thinking if this is essentially the same motor as in the tundras of the time possibly a tundra case could work? IDK im just throwing ideas around. Stirring the pot...

After '05 all the 4th Gens had the same transmission except that the tailshaft end is different for 4WD.

With how many people seem to be having issues with their 4th Gen 4Runner T-cases, I'm surprised a shop hasn't tackled this to see if is possible. I was looking at a parted-out GX470 a while back on Craigslist, dreaming about snagging the transfer case for my 4Runner.

if you look over on rocksolid toys forum all the guys who have sasd their runners and tacomas have done it. it involves unplugging the 4wd ecu and then jumping a few pins in the connector to retain the 4wd lights, but you do lose atrac and dac, but its pretty useless to me since i have a rear and soon to be front locker.

Noticed this guy has a v8 and swapped in another tcase too.
