FJ spring question

FJ spring question , lift , wheels

I may do this but wondering about the FJ spring mod . OK I know I would need to order front and rear FJ springs. I checked with the dealer today to ask if there is a difference between the std FJ's , the TT FJ and the TRD FJ springs ??? Naturally I can't get an answer and why does my 4R need FJ spring and it won't work because they Are different , blah , blah .

The springs I know are slightly longer on the reg FJ and have are heavier rated so a little harsher ride. Just wondering if any different on the other 2 models.

Any idea of cost might be for 4 springs (an educated guess ???)

Im am seriously debating puling the Xreas off. I want a 2/1 or maybe 2.5/1.5 at most. I think the Xreas makes a difference over the non X , but I would guess a set of better spring/shocks / CO's will be better maybe . I have 57k on the truck 2006 , I am already running 1" up tire 32's 265/70/17's and really don't want to go any bigger.

I'm also having wheel issues trying to find FJ or Tundra rims. That pisses me off since the deals fell through , but I can get a brand new set for 600.00 .... to much ?? I prefer the Tundra's , but will take what I can find.

I would head over to the FJ forums as there has to be plenty of people there with relatively new rides that take off the wheels and springs you are looking for and will sell for significantly less than new at the dealer.

Falls, from what i can tell, the springs are the same with all FJ 4x4. The difference is with the shocks...special edition and off-road package FJs come with Bilsteins.

I remember seeing $50 for front springs for sale once...so, i would not pay more than $200 for all 4 springs. I would also check EBAY.

Why don't you just upgrade the front springs and keep the XREAS? And i do not think that ANY aftermarket shocks/springs can duplicate what XREAS provides in terms of handling and ride comfort. XREAS works because of the way it is cross-linked, not because of the shocks or springs themselves.

Good luck.

I too have seen them at fjcruiserforums for $50. This was for the front two springs.

I recently won a pair of auctions on eBay for the front ($21.50) and rear ($21.50) springs. Total cost including shipping was about $50.

Have you installed them yet? If so pics please. I am thinking of doing this too.

I think my starting plan is FJ springs front and rear and a spacer up front , but am thinking about going to the poly Daystar 1.25 instead of my 1" CF , maybe have a better ride , it's black and won't oxidize like the Alum. one. that should give me a 2/1 maybe slightly more.

I noticed DS has a 2" rear leveling kit , what the hell would that be for ??

I got my 4 FJ springs for the staggering price of $0.

Some guy over at the FJ forum said I could have the fronts for free as long as I took the rears and the boxes they are in :D

Does Daystar offer 1.25"?, I see 1" offered.

That is the kit which advertises 2" but measures and provides 1.5". It is incorrectly called a "leveling kit" and is also incorrectly measured.

They dont. We have been thru this before in thread after thread. The kits offered by Wheelers as 1.25" dont give that amount of lift. The (oldstlye) topout gives 2" and the (oldstlye)preload gives 1". Not sure about the new all topout easy install 2.5" kit as to weather that gives the advertised 2.5" or 3.0".

Pullin' the trigger finally! I know you've been pondering doing something with the suspension for a while.

I still love my setup. I don't think you'll regret it. :bigok:

I'm just afraid that I may want a little more .

Thai , I know what your saying about Xreas , but between the SR5's and the Limiteds (that mostly don't have it) it does not seem like anyone complains about it. I feel it's a cleaner, more reliable simpler set up. , Well see .

I'd like to see how Dougs (10milehusker) truck come out.

Oh yeah, there is no doubt that a regular suspension is simpler, easier to repair/replace. However, if you like your current suspension setup AND the fact that you have it on already, then you may not want to change because nothing else can match its performance.

Remember, with higher lifts come higher maintenance. You have to be more vigilant in watching the wear & tear of suspension components (CV boots for example). More headaches. As some have found out, the lift suspension will never be as smooth and comfy as the stock suspension...or in your case, as good of a handler as your XREAS 4runner. I know that you have been researching this for a long time...you may want to define what you want out of your truck before committing. Don't be like someone on this forum who have gone through multiple suspension system for nothing.

Personally, i would get the cheap FJ springs and invest my leftover money on rocksliders and possibly rear locker from ARB. If you're going to take your 4runner off-road, then rocksliders should be at the very top of your list! (Nothing will protect your investment like rocksliders.) :) Besides your driving skills, the next thing that gains respect off-road is a locker. Locker makes a huge difference off-road. And you get an air compressor to boot! :) Like i said to Josh, if you're going to off-road, then you put FUNCTION OVER FORM. You do what is NEEDED, not what will make your 4runner look cool to the girls.

My opinion.

:iagree: I would add based on all of your inquiries and attempting to read between the lines it sounds like you'll be thrilled with a small front spacer, XREAS and FJC springs. The wanting more thing: If you get 1 to 1.5" worth (total lift) of spacer and the FJC springs I doubt you'll be unsatisfied. If you were talking a 3/2 all along then I'd say you might not be happy.

Thai's point about funds distribution is a great one. I'd love all kinds of toys. Having a good suspension with money left over is a great feeling. Funds being no object I'd love SAW on the front, brake lines, long shocks on the rear w/ my rear FJ springs. The added cost associated with the gained performance above and beyond what I have can't be justified for my performance goals/needs. Define the goal

They ride a bit stiffer, but in a good way. It wasn't harsh at all. Look around the FJ forums, as they will be let go for dirt cheap. Blair got his for free and they look/ride great.

They are barely bigger than the 4Runner coils. Side by side, the FJ coils only have 1 extra coil on them, but they are a little stiffer. We could make the 4Runner coils compress using 1 foot.

Good points guys , thanks for bringing me back to earth.....lol.

I am going to do my 1" CF spacer and the 4 FJ spring's. I'm guessing it would yield me close to the 2/1 that I would order from cornfed ? Does that sound right ? Then I'll have a little heavier spring rate and my 1" spacer will level it up a little more. I do want some rake to it atleast an inch or tad more.

Hopefully if I get FJ rims with the different offset/backspace I will still be able to clear my 265/70/17 without rubbing. Advice on that would be helpful too.

Really the only thing I don't like on my 4R is the rake and the wheels being tucked in so tight , which has pro's/con's off getting less crap on the side of the truck , but the stance looks funny .

The 1" spacers... 1" thick or 1" lift? Either way you'll be happy. You will have some rake too... I'd do the 1" lift and the springs. I am pretty sure we have similar taste and like it to be the way it should've been delivered from Toyota. I had .75" lift spacers made. I have no beefs with J.B. or the Cornfed spacers. Hindsight being 20/20 I wish I had gone with a 1-1.25" lift spacer and my FJC springs. I can also say with great conviction that I wouldn't long for more than that. You're going to love it! Just do it :bigok:
