FJ swapping

I found an FJ in a salvage yard this weekend. I was wondering if the 4.0 in it was the same series engine as my 3.4 and would bolt in. I was also curious about swapping in the 6-speed and locking rear diff and maybe the wheels and stuff.

Any ideas?

They are definitely not the same series engine and they will in no way bolt right up to your existing set up. As for the rear axle, you may be able to swap the 3rd member only, assuming the FJ is using the same 8" diff on the locked models, but seeing as FJ's are considerably wider you would not be able to swap the whole axle. I believe all 3rd gen runners use the 8" toyota axle locked or not,older Tacomas use the 8.4' w/ open diffs and 8' w/ locker. The engine bay on my 02 is pretty tight, but people do manage to swap V8's in Toyotas, so w/ a lot of modifcations the 4.0 might fit, but if you are looking for a pre made swap kit forget it, this will be a custom job requiring a lot of fabrication and mechanical know how. If you intend to take this on I would try and get the whole truck, that way you have lots of parts, at the very least you will need the engine, ecu, wiring harness, tranny and transfer case to make it work right. If you want more power I would go for a supercharger and all the goodies, ie fuel mods and such, that should give you plenty of power. Also keep in mind all 6 speed 4wd FJ's are full time, so that is another issue, not sure how the front diff on the 3rd gen will hold up to full time 4wd, even later 3rd gens had the option of 2wd. I know the FJ and newer trucks use a larger front diff than the older 7.5" model.
