Fj80 solid axle swap

Hello, I'm starting to gather parts, parts lists and information for my solid axle swap for my 97 limited 4runner that I have already 5spd swapped.

Plan is to swap both front and rear fj80 axles into my 4runner. I have already tracked down a 3.4l t100 I just need to go buy it and take the tcase.

I know I a few people have done this Axle swap. I read all of mmml4's thread and learnt alot and also I thread on Ih8mud but the guy stopped posting. My question is there more threads out there I missed or people who haven't made any threads but would like to share? Also has anyone 3linked the cruiser axle. Looking to 3link coilovers right from the start for the front and keep the rear 4link until I have more money to change it up

Thanks in advance!

As far as I know the ih8mud thread and mmml4’s are the only ones. There might be some on Pirate4x4. What I would do is go on the jeep forums and look through the threads where people are swapping axles and doing a 3 link. Same principles apply for either vehicle.

Will you have a passenger drop case or will you be running Marlin crawlers adapter to the RF1A case. I am doing my swap with a stretched Toyota truck solid axle. 3 link on ORI. Join Mud and check that out. Lots more info about 3 link and also Pirate as well as Tacomaworld

I have maybe 20 threads saved for the 3 links. I haven't posted any progress yet. I will be posting soon

A passenger side drop tcase. That's why I found a t100 with the 3.4l. They have passenger side drop tcases that bolt right up. Youd just have to modify the exhaust I believe

I'm still looking for some axles. I have one I could buy but he wants 3500$ cad for both front and rear locked axles a little steep. I'm not starting yet so I'll wait a bit

4Running Daily is planning his SAS. Maybe he knows of some good threads with information.

I would give 4WheelUnderground.Com a cal if your looking for a kit with all the mounts and links layed out for you. I've seen a trail gear kit done on a 1st Gen taco but it ended up way higher than I would have liked.

X1000

Talk with Brian at 4WU and he knows his shit. There is an article in 4WD Toyota Owner magazine on 3 & 4 link suspension written by Brian as well.

Thanks guys but I'm trying to avoid kits. I want to attempt to fabricate all the brackets. If I fail then I'll give in and buy brackets or a kit. Everything I've done to this truck I've tried to do on my own, even if it doesn't save me money in the long run I want to know how it's done and how it works!

Man if you were closer I’d take what’s left of that t100. That’s gonna be my next project. Sas t100 maybe a 2uz/1uz v8 in there too. Just gotta finish my jeep and this POS gmc Safari I picked up

Something is ****y with the front end that's why I'm getting it for cheap. If it was 5spd and a good frame I would have out a 2jz in and slam it . But it has the 3.4l gonna keep the engine for a rainy day and part out the rest

I’m just looking for one so I can basically gut it. I was thinking just take the whole engine, tranny, and transfer case from an early tundra and throw it in there and make it work. Then cut out the ifs crap and put in a Chevy D44, then your golden. I’d also put a flat bed on it.

My friend has a taco with the trail gear 3link it's definitely too tall for my liking. Did some measurements he's 26" frame to ground sitting on 35s.

My end goal is 3link front 4 link back and 20" to 22" frame to ground on 37s or 40s. Coming closer to finding axles. So far found front and rear elocked for 3500$ cad or open front and rear for 1500$ or open front lsd rear for 1600$

I have a friend who would trade me locked 410 gears for his 529s straight trade so I'd be winning.

You won't hit that ride height if you have any appreciable uptravel....and the 4WU kit will also net you a close to 26" frame height on 37's.

I think 22" is doable with 5" of uptravel in front on 37s....but you'll have to likely notch your frame rail and reinforce it or cut it off completely and re-fab the front of the frame at a higher level. You're going to need to push the axle forward at least 2-4" and your steering is going to be difficult to clear regardless at that low a ride height. You will also need the T100 oil pan.

Not sure I'd do the T100 case. Unless it happens to be the same as the gear driven case found in the older Toyota trucks that are passenger drop (23 spline). You need the older design as the upgrade potential is much better.....but I admittedly don't know if the T100 used the same case. I was under the impression it used the 23 spline chain driven case.

4:10 gears aren't going to work with 37 or 40" tires....you're going to need 5.29s or 5.71s. I wouldn't recommend a 40" tire on a Fj80 axle either. Your rig is going to be 5500 to 6K lbs easily once you get it all set up with winch, armor and solid axles. It's really better suited at that weight (for heavy 4wheeling) to a D60 to be honest. I'm running 300M RCVs in my widened Fj80 axle on 37s and I"m betting I still break axles.

Thank-you for the info! The t100 tcase is chain driven like ours... Planning to put a gear driven case in front of it.

I know the ride height will be hard to achieve but I don't mind going full bush truck and cutting the frame and have the shock mounts through the hood and through the back of the truck.

I already have 529s Lined up! But that's sad you wouldn't recommend 40s... Maybe I'll start looking at d60s the only reason Im not going 1ton axles is because I don't want to narrow them down. I need the truck to be street legal and being too wide won't keep me legal. I don't have a truck to pull it on a trailer to the trails. :( I'm already 5500lb now with all my camping gear :/ I could just settle with 37s untill I buy a diesel as a tow rig.

I saw a 2nd gen Tacoma with a Toyota SAS swap. It was very clean and nicely done. It was probably 3-4” lift also. Nothing insane.
