Correct. I flat tow my dad's jeep all the time. Just wondering what is involved to do the same with a 4runner? Disconnect drive shaft?

yes you can flat tow put the t-case it N, the trans in N, and make sure that the front hubs are unlocked. no need to remove the front or rear drive shaft. That is what the "N" it the t-case is for.

disconnect the drive shafts. Its not as important (but still safer) with a standard because the gears sling oil to lubricate, it is necessary with an auto (the machine has to pump oil out of the pan to lubricate). And even with an auto you may do it for a long time without problem all the while shortening the life of your machinery. Its a personal decision, do what you feel comfortable doing. removing 4 bolts is pretty cheap insurance in my opinion.
I have a bar from Draw-tight(i think) that pins together and collapses down into a carry bag.

You have to understand how the t-case works.
If you look at the shift pattern on the knob, you'll see you go into 4WD HI before you get to Neutral.
So when you are in Neutral, the input shaft of the t-case is disconnected from the trans, but the case is still in 4WD.
That means the rear axle turns the rear drive shaft, which turns the innards of the case, which turns the front drive shaft.
Not only is all that turning and creating unnecessary wear and drag, but the case isn't necessarily being lubed properly because the input isn't turning.
But it's your call.

if you look really close there is a metal tab in the middle of the bumper inside the 2 uprights, there is a whole that goes all the way through. i have a u haul pulling system that goes into the tabs and i just put a pin through.. haha if that makes sence. i welded them in so they will always be there.
as to the towing.... i would disconect the drive shafts and make sure the hubs are unlocked. disconecting the drive lines helps in a few ways. ones a huge safty thing "hope for the best, plan for the worst" and second if u diconect them and tow the vehical acrost the country there is a few thousand miles that isnt on your tach. just in case u ever deside to sell your rig.
a lady i work for towed there brand new Kia to idaho from NY and tried to sell it but didnt get a good price. "lots of miles on it"
