disconnect the drive shafts. Its not as important (but still safer) with a standard because the gears sling oil to lubricate, it is necessary with an auto (the machine has to pump oil out of the pan to lubricate). And even with an auto you may do it for a long time without problem all the while shortening the life of your machinery. Its a personal decision, do what you feel comfortable doing. removing 4 bolts is pretty cheap insurance in my opinion.
