"floating brake pads"?

I have a rattle in the front tires when I go over bumps, but it does NOT happen if the brake pedal is pressed even lightly. The dealer worked on the truck for A WEEK! They swapped calipers, pads, etc and still the same. They called Toyota in Cali too and they said there was no TSB on this. This is by design according to them so the front brake pads do not wear out quick. They also said they drove new 06 V8s and the same noise is there. They asked me to drive one from the lot, but I did not have time to do so. ANyone have this on 06 v8s? It's not a big deal, I was just wondering.

Mine does not rattle. I would have to agree with the dealer that the pads do not wear out any faster then expected. I guess it is also dependant on the driver. I changed my pads at 40 k miles and had plenty of thickness left (about 4 mm). I guess I could have gone 50 to 60 k miles before really needing to change them.

i have an 06 V8 Ltd and i do not hear any rattling form the tire/brake area..
have you tried changin the tire out to the spare to see if the noise goes away? could be something loose on the wheel or in the tire like the stem or the balance weights?

No. Again it does not happen when I brake so it does revolve around the braking system. Also it happens on both sides. I mean, the dealer replaced everything (so they say) and stilll a rattle. I gave up on this already because I don't know what else to do and it doesnt bother me that much.

There are some type of clips that keep the pads from moving, other then sliding back and forth when appling the brakes. One or more of those clips could be broken or missing. They are usally attached to the outer edge of the pad itself. You should be able to take off the wheel and move the pads if that is the problem.

I know those little clips you are talking about Bill. They are used on a floating caliper. You will find those clips on the rear of the runner but not the front. BTW I hate those stupid clips. A set of those things cost more than the pads on my son's corolla.

This stuff prevents squealing and rattling it bonds the brake to the caliper.

Greasefingers is correct, the front calipers on these 4Runners do not use the anti-rattle clips between the pads and caliper like the rear system. The front calipers are a four piston setup, not a 'floating' caliper, like the rears which are a single piston caliper. Because the front caliper doesn't move from side to side, the pads are held in place with two pins which go into two alignment holes in each pad. The pads are allowed to float on these pins. There is a spring clip which attaches around the lower pin and is designed to keep the pads from rattling (Anti-rattle spring). The shims installed in between the pads and the caliper pistons are designed to stop brake pad squeal. If the anti-rattle clip is not installed, or installed incorrectly, it could allow the pads to rattle when the brakes are not applied.

I have not noticed any rattling from mine, but since I ride with the windows us most of the year, it would be hard to hear.

hi to all.im a new member here because my wife is really gutted about what happened to her 03 sr5 4Runner after we just finished changing the brakes after 25,000 miles required.honestly i dont know anything on fixing cars like you guys do here cause im only a driver.so i decided to search this awesome forum and saw an exact problem to what happened to my wifes 4 runner 2 weeks ago.the replies by techwrench and greasefingers were really helpful.2 weeks ago,we did the minor 25,000 service at miller toyota here in culver city.then toyota suggested that its time to change the breaks cause its only like 20% left.but we were really hard up on cash and decided to go to pepboys $123.98 versus the toyotas $225.at first, i doubted maybe it happened after toyota did the service,but my wife is not convinced.we went back and forth to toyota and pepboys and they kept on pointing fingers lol.so the awesome manager of pepboys concede that the mechanic of toyota said that it was brakes and he unethically told us that pepboys installed like $5 worth piece of brake!we went to pepboys and test drived with the manager,cause the same problem but was just a not so loud rattling sound like coming from the front left part everytime the runner goes on a rough road or hump.so pepboys manager steps on brakes, and noise goes away.so he said,let toyota replace with there genuine brakes and give them back there brakes and theyll refund as to what he did today which was awesome.ealry this morning my wife brought her 4runner to dealer around 7 am and got the runner at 11 am.she drove it to work cause she has a busy schedule.problem is, the noise went from mild to severe!its like both sides now after toyota changed it with their so called $225 genuine parts!even in not so rough road, its like something is hitting a turning fan sound.it got worst.so tomorrow, we'll be back there again and i printed the forums but not my reply.so me and my wife are happy that atleast we saw some signs that were not alone.i was thinking on is there anyway to write a letter to toyota regarding this issue?its kinda like after you change there factory brakes,it just goes bad all of the sudden.maybe there might be anti-rattle spring missing i just wish that youre right with that TechWrench.or maybe toyota is just getting to overrated now because theyre on top and they dont give a crap about quality anymore that they just charge people too much for there cars.

thanks greasefingers!i already printed out your reply this morning when i went to Miller toyota to trail my wife cause we brought the runner back there again.the same toyota mechanic responded to my wife after they test drive and said in a humble way and agreed that the noise became worst.my wife really took care of her stock 4 runner for only 3 yrs now and just after changing the brakes,it became like a rattle machine.its so stressing for us but this forum really gave us an idea of whats going on with the noise.and we really appreciate the knowledge you guys share.thanks.:cheers:

Dealer just called saying that my "splash guard" was bent. I asked him what does that have to do with the brakes, he said "I have no idea, but the noise is gone." I will GUARANTEE he is full o fit. Thats ONE visit to this dealer, two more and I will lemon law this sob.

do you think the brake rattling might be considered life threat defects?

so if the splash guard is bent?does it have any connection when the noise disappear when you step on the brakes?i just hope that hes saying the truth so that the mechanic working on my wifes suv can fix it fast before we drive out fresno this weekend.those dealer mechanics really think that toyota buyers are retarded.

Well I don't know if thats true in Jersey. I know of a guy who lemon lawed a car because of a continous oil leak. And by the way, the rattle is still there. They ordered the new CAT for me because of the sulfur smell. WHen i take it back for that, I will let them know the rattle is still there. That will be visit number two.
