Hey guys was just wondering when I floor my 4Runner on Drive the rpm goes all the way to redline before switching gear, is this normal? Thought the transmission would switch gears sooner.

Ect on normal not power.
That cable controls line pressure in the transmission and affects how firm the transmission shifts. The transmission controls shift points electronically based on throttle position among other things.
Mine only does that with the ECT on. Normally it will shift between 3500-4000 depending on gear and temp.
I'm sorry, I'm not trying to be difficult, but is this a serious question?
I don't think I've ever in my life driven a car that when you hold the gas pedal all the way down it won't go to redline every time before switching gears. Maybe I'm confused on your question...

Lol yes it is, I’m the biggest newb with cars hence why I joined this forum to ask even the basic questions. I’m also ocd with stuff so I wanted to make sure nothing was wrong with my transmission but I think it’s good. Thanks for all the responses guys!

Newb, you've got an approximately 20+ year old vehicle, don't dog it! Why??? ? It's not the way to test any old vehicle. You are only inviting breakdowns prematurely. Any old machine doesn't need any more stress than would normally come its way, who floors it regularly or even at all??? But yeah do Enjoy the Runner! :cowboy:
No worries..and as said below, take it easy. No need in redlining this car. The only reason to do so would be if you have to. Or, you just don't care.
I'm at 300k right now. I can't even remember the last time this truck has seen redline. Honestly, I can't remember..

Your mind will really be blown if you drive a manual transmission vehicle. You can often go PAST redline before the ECU will cut fuel and/or spark...

It's not just manuals bro. I bounce my rig off it's rev limiter all the time snow wheeling. 4wd lo in 3rd locked front and rear will only do about 25 MPH before it rev limits. 5500 RPM is where that limit is on my rig. lol

If it's bouncing off the rev limiter and you have to let off the gas so it shifts, there is a problem. If it just taps redline and shifts with no issues at all, that's totally normal. This is definitely not something you want to do regularly though, especially on an old and likely worn engine. Since you're new to vehicles in general, do yourself and having the timing belt and water pump changed unless you know the history of the vehicle and you know without a doubt that it's been recently done. I believe Toyota says every 85,000 miles but I may be wrong on that.

Redline a day, keeps the carbon away... at least thats what I tell myself. Honestly, my truck sees 5krpm daily, you try merging on the freeways in CA without getting run off the road. I have 300k miles and its running as strong as ever (good Maintenance is key). You will not hurt anything by doing this. If you are bouncing the rev-limiter then yes you will eventually have problems.
To answer your question, if you stomp on it, yes it will rev up to ~5,000-5,200rpm and shift. Where it shifts is not actually redline, rather a high rpm shift point. Redline is the rev limiter and you will know when you hit that.
A good rule of thumb is 1st gets you to 40mph, 2nd gets you to 70mph and 3rd gets you way faster than you should be going in a 4runner anyway...

No I was actually flooring it to make sure my transmission was shifting properly. I was driving and I felt or thought my transmission was slipping. It was actually my first time ever doing that in my 4Runner. But it’s all good now transmission shifts just fine. Thank you all for your replies!

To put a finer point on it - using the engine up to redline is perfectly safe. If you want your engine to last, make sure it is fully warm when you do it. That doesn't mean the temp needle is at the middle, fully warm takes about 10 miles or minutes of driving, at least (more in winter, of course). It takes a while for the oil to get up to operating temp...

Check your throttle cable... you may not actually be getting full throttle. It should be quite easy to get to 3500 rpm, even with ECT in the normal position.

If you 2000 has a TV cable going to the trans check that as well.
