My 89 had the common floppy shifter that rocked from side to side and front to back way too far, and sometimes i thought i was in park it was in reverse, so I took it apart.
4 screws for the outer bezel and the wire for the power button unplug. pull tab from front of shifter forward to release shifter top button. pop out OD button, remove both shifters screws and pull them up. cut OD wires near front of 4wd shifter and pull both grips off.
4 more screws to remove the PRND12 plate, it wont come off without removing the grips.
Remove all the 10 mm bolts from the base plate.
Crawl under and remove the nut holding the 4wd linkage on the drivers side, i think it was 13 mm. Ant the tranz linkage on the drivers side, its a tight spot, mine had a snap ring, that i wouldn't think is original.
then lift the plate twist and take your time it will all lift out together without forcing it.
push out the bolt sleeves from the rubber pad below the plate and push the rubber threw the holes on the passenger side only. this exposes a nut on the under side of the plate that holds the tranz shifter in place.
remove the nut and the bolt and pull the tranz shifter assembly out.
then the fun part shim the bolt with bushings that im told arnt available any more, so i made some out of copper.
the bolt should fit inside but not wobble or grip, i used a dremmel to polish the inside of the bushings.
then the rubber bushing on the shift linkage. im told also not sold anymore, and thicker than a standard grommet. i got a shift linkage bushing for an 03 dodge 1500 from a dealership for 12 bucks. perfect fit, i soaked it in hot water so i wouldn't rip it
snap ring pin fit tighter in the new bushing, and its a tight spot if you dont have a body lift, just go with a snap ring.
put it all back together and better than new. just need the slide plates that mine were already gone.
