Flowmaster super 44 installed and resonator cut off!

Hey you guys, its been a while since i had my flowmaster super 44 muffler installed, i just never got to do a full write up of it, so here we go! I bought the muffler for 64 dollars on ebay! I took it to a muffler shop, big al's, and the welded in the muffler for 50 dollars, which i think is a bit pricey but it was the cheapest in my area. WHAT A DIFFERENCE. First off, the stock muffler ways like 10 times more than the flowmaster, the flowmaster is so much smaller and lighter, i first had it installed with the stock exhaust system, so i had the resonator on there. I drove with that for about 2 months. It sounded GREAT! It wasn't too loud i don't believe, i do enjoy my noticeable exhaust note however. And well for drone, it never really occurred to me since i have my music turned on all the time! It sounds great, and i'm so glad i didn't go with the SUV 50 series exhaust. Then i decided, i wanted to up a little bit more sound, so i asked around to see who would cut off my resonator for me, exhaust shops were charging 50 bucks. WHAT THE HELL? So i cut off the resonator using a blade, took a bit of time, but then i bought a 90 degree elbow pipe and a u clamp from advanced auto parts for like 10 dollars in all. I put that on and used my stock exhaust tip and it looks great! The only thing now is i want to get the end of my pipe welded in with the hanger so my exhaust isn't just hanging. WITH the resonator OFF. THAT THING IS LOUD. Especially at the low rev ranges! at 2000 rpm that thing screams, and i love it. I also notice that my car gets better gas mileage, and i also have much better throttle response!

I'm very curious to see and hear more details/pics of where/how/what you used for the resonator cutoff from Advance. I want to do this too.

Think we could/should be able to buy some sort of hanger that clamps on instead of needing to have one welded?

Guess I'm wondering:

- How long is that tip?
- What's the 'inlet' diameter of the tip
- What's the diameter of the '90 degree bend' from advance?
- You just used U clamps to essentially crush the exhaust to hold together?

Very curious. I'm thinking I can just use my circular saw with a metal cutting blade to cut off right behind the resonator. This sounds awesome as a DIY and potentially not needing any welding, and paying a shop!

The tip is about 5-6-1/2 inches long. The inlet diameter of the tip should be 2.5. Don't worry, i was really afraid that it wouldn't work at first, but be a man and cut off that resonator! I didn't even have a machine, but defiantly cut it off! Here's the tip, as soon as the resonator ends, cut right there. Don't cut off any additional pipe, the elbow that i bought just said for inlet diameter of 2.5. It fit great, but it had a bit of wiggle room, but nothing i couldn't fix with the u clamp. I could leave it like that, but i want to do it right. IMO, i prefer the look of the side exit exhaust rather than the straight out the back with the stock 4runners!

Thanks. Excellent advice. I just placed an order through Summit for an 8'' Gibson bolt on rectangular, slanted tip, a hanger and the Air Lift 1000 (this order gave me an excuse to get the air bags I've been thinking about). I also got the 90 deg 2.5 inlet from Advance and the metal cutoff wheel.

I'm still nervous, but I'll cut it when I get the hanger.

Well... I installed it last night. It sounds great, but I have an uneasy feeling because I feel like it's like so "redneck rigged" - you know what I mean?

The inlet on that exhaust piece had a lot of wiggle room, but I clamped it down anyway. So basically, the 90 degree bend piece's inlet seemed bigger than it should have been and sort of went into an oval shape before it fully caught and grabbed onto my stock pipe that I cut off immediately behind the resonator.

Then my hanger is soooo rigged... I bought some cheap bolts and tried to screw into the rusted hole that I mentioned on the frame and my bolt broke off (in there) about half way through... So that hole's closed for good because there's no room to drill it out and tap it again or anything.

Then the bend pipe seems/looks like its at around a 95 degree bend because of the nature of what was left of my stock pipe to grab onto.

I have a hanger up and into the stock hanger point, but man is it strugging... Its on an angle and just generally not like it's supposed to be, with a BOLT through the stock hanger rubber...

I might end up going back and replacing the 90 degree with a 45 degree pipe, because I think it will look better and it will be at a better position to grab the stock hanger.

But the biggest update from this is the volume of my overall exhaust definitely got louder! (I'm frankly a little nervous that it might droan on the highway, but we'll see!)

I'll post pics later after I get home and can take pics in the daylight.

Sound clips?

I was looking at either the flowmaster 50, 40, or 44 muffler and removing the resonator and only having a short downward pipe to redirect exhaust gases attached. This will clean up the backend and leave less to drag on steep angles while off-roading.

But my T4R is also my DD so I dont want something that has a high drone output at freeway speed.

So, after driving home tonight, I'm very worried its too loud... Was frankly ticked when I got home at just how much louder it is now. I swear its a more dramatic change than when I replaced the stock muffler with the magnaflow to begin with.

At high RPMs, it now absolutely screams and pops, where before it had a nice performance sound only and only screamed a little.

Just louder than I expected a 22' Magnaflow to sound today - resonator or no resonator...

smaller the muffler, the louder the sound. this super 44 muffler seems smaller than the cherrybomb vortex.

***Sorry... I realize I'm absolutely hijacking your thread, but just wanted to comment that, as ridiculous as it sounds, I might be taking my resonator back to an exhaust shop and having them weld it back in.

I am absolutely astonished at how much the tone of my exhaust changed (I mean, at WOT, it sounds like one of the cars I see at the drag strip that runs off race fuel with headers and straight pipes!) I mean thats probably an exaggeration, but good lord is it LOUD when I'm getting on it.

I feel like I look silly in an SUV making that much ruckus... lol.

Hopefully a muffler shop will just charge like $30 or something to weld it back on and then I can just throw my nice new tip on the back so I don't waste the money I spent on it! If not, I'll have to have them add-in a resonator somewhere, because thing is way too loud now...

But the turning the exhaust DIY did work, and worked well! Thanks for the suggestion!

For FYI on anyone reading this ---> again, I have the 22" Magnaflow muffler welded in place of my stock muffler.

Are you referring to the resonator by the cats or something diff...I have had magnaflow catbaxk installed so long I don't remember if there was a res by the muffler

Thanks for the reply. Well, I just had the 22" maggy installed in place of the stock muffler - not the whole Magnaflow catback. And what I removed the other night was the stock Toyota resonator that is behind the rear axle right by the stock tip location. It's like the size of a Jr. football right before the tip. That's what I cut off to turn the exhaust behind the rear wheel.

Still baffled at how much louder it is now! I expected a little more volume, and thought that would be a good thing, but it's sooo much louder.

I'm taking your advice and am going to leave it this way for a couple weeks. Might start to like it. Its already growing on me sometimes and other times I hate it. Lol its all the situation.

Sometimes I've found myself gunning it because someone ticked me off and I want the muffler to bark at them, others I'm like ''I hope a cop didn't hear that'' or I'm just trying to ''pass someone while being sneaky fast'' and its not possible now. You know what I mean?

Thanks for the sound clips. Man, that exhaust is pretty loud, not that its a bad thing, sounds like a beast! But the vid showing the inside and revving is a bit too loud for me.

I think I'll be going with the Flowmaster 50 w/o resonator though.

Got an update on this... I've been cruising around for awhile now and have come to the conclusion that I am definitely a fan of the way it sounds at startup/idle/cruising/light throttle acceleration, but I can't stand how raspy and like "monster trucky" it sounds when I'm on the gas. It's not just WOT, but if on the gas a little harder, it just draws way too much attention. With the resonator on there, it sounded nice and "performance". Now it's just like "HEY, LOOK AT ME! I'M LOOOOOOOUDDDDD!!!! BARK BARK"

Anyway, this all came after I've been thinking this for some time, but additionally, I dropped my wife off near her building in downtown Pittsburgh, and as she was getting out, the looong light up ahead turned green, so she hurried and got out, and I gassed it to get through the light.

Lol after this, she called me - she wasnt upset or anything, but was like "good lord, that thing sounded like a monster truck!" and said it was like embarassing because of the other people around/etc. So I've decided I need to quiet this thing down so I don't sound like I'm taking off in a "Funny Car" at the drag strip!

***Now that I've lost everyone's interest due to my blab fest above... What I'm going to do is try to research and find a good bolt-on RESONATED tip. I'm hoping that this will bring me back to what it sounded like with the stock football size resonator still installed. Or at least take that awful barking rasp out of the tone.

If anyone knows a good resonated tip that I can either bolt on with a sleeve, or has the bolts built into it, I'd be happy to hear about them! The sooner I get this resolved, the sooner I can get onto a LIFT project!
