This is the quote I got from the dealer:
1. ATF change (includes screen change?!) - $349.00
2. Front differential $79.00
3. Transfer case $59.00
4. Rear differential - $92.00

Does that seem reasonable?

The tech I talked to seemed to know what he was talking about. One thing he said though I didn't quite get - he said that synthetic gear oil won't make any difference. As in "with the engine oil and transmission oil it's a very good idea, but for the differentials it won't do any better than conventional".
Better lube is better lube as far as I'm concerned. Am I missing something?

1. ATF change (includes screen change?!) - $349.00 Crazy high... A 'screen' change isn't necessary. A fluid exchange (using the proper WS fluid) is the right answer. $125-$199, tops.


2-4 seem a little high but it is the stealership. That is for synthetic, correct?

Synthetic is a great idea for axles unless you change it every 30k. Synthetic and 60-90k is probably fine, I wouldn't want to go that far on conventional. Synthetic is better in the temp extremes, hot and cold.
Better lube is better lube as far as I'm concerned. Am I missing something?

NONE of the quotes you got are reasonable. As CJ3Flyer said, a tranny fluid change shouldn't be more than $200 (give or take). As far as the front/rear diffs and TC, if you are somewhat mechanically inclined, you can do it yourself!! Very easy to do, there's a sticky for that! Some say it's easier to do than changing the oil.

Synthetic not making a difference?? As far as drive-ability, no, you won't FEEL a difference, but you will be better protecting your truck.

1 seemed high to me too, but I don't know how much labor is required for the "screen change" on these sealed trannys (I guess this is a newer version of the old "drop and clean the pan and replace the filter" thing).

No, 2-4 is with whatever "normal" fluids they use.

One other thing - I just noticed that with my engine I had to change the spark plugs at 60K (I'm now at 65K with nothing to suggest I need new spark plugs) and it's required under the emission control warranty or something like that. Does that mean I've blown my "emission control" warranty?

1.) Looks to be at least double what it should be.
2,3,4.) I've seen prices between $40 to $60 for each individual one ($120 to $180 total for all three). $92 is quoted for the rear diff? that's makes no sense at all.

Got two more quotas from local dealers.

Service, dealer 1 price, dealer 2 price:
1. AT "fluid exchange" (no screen change), $229.95, $189.95
2. Front, rear diff. and transfer case (each.), $75, $119.95

Front diff, rear diff, and transfer case are all really easy to do on your own -- just need a cheap pump (Pep Boys or similar - $10ish) and the gear oil.

For the transmission service, I don't think that's too far out of line, given the hassle involved in these no-dipstick "sealed" transmissions, and the cost of Toyota WS fluid.

I'd pay $200-250 to have someone else change the trans fluid out with proper WS.

I have to spend part of this weekend changing the transmission fluid on my wife's 2005 Tacoma (same drivetrain, same transmission). I spent about $120 for 14 quarts of WS fluid, and I'm guessing it'll be a messy couple of hours. I'm doing it myself because I don't really trust that the correct fluid will get installed.

I know it's easy to change the oil in the diffs and transfer case, but I don't have neither the tools nor the place to do it.
The way they flush it with the machine is actually very little labor involved. Essentially unhook/hook a couple of hoses to put the machine in the loop.

I just spoke to a 4th dealer and he quoted me $75 for each FD,RD,TC.

I guess I should have worded my question not if it's reasonable, but how much your local stealership charges....
