Took few guys from Tacoma forum to a local spot to show around. After all day wheeling. And after dinner driving home I hear a pound banging sound going through bumps. Check under and yea!

My friend said he can cut it and weld new metal.

Anyone have suggestion to maybe relocate the shock mounts ?

wow man, yeah i keep my buckets up there clean, that little hole they made for a drain hole clogs up with dirt with the smallest pebble.

your options could be to weld a new bracket in or just go with exterior shock hoops.

More info on exterior hoops! I got these bad boys other night

Is still possible to do the exterior ?

My rear set up is superflex coils with fj 5100. It's possible to mount the shocks on the original axle ?

Bump. Does anyone have reliable info on outboard/outside frame relocation? Is there aweld on kit available? Do you still use existing lower shock mounts that are on the oem axle ? Can you still flex out on outside frame relocation with 285/75/16

Holy shit! You're the first I've seen to have a failure like that. Those areas are supposed to be thick metal. I'm pretty sure you can buy the upper shock mounts directly from Toyota to weld on.

Thanks bud. ! I'm so hurt man. That this happened. I really really am trying my hardest to stop/fight rust. It kills me. I put so much money and sweat into it and it pays me back with this BS! It's a good feeling to wheel all day and go home safely at the end. Never a good feeling when this happens. Worst case scenario is once rust completely takes over. You can get a cleaner rig, and swap parts. But that is a long shot beyond. I truly don't have rust compared to actually rusted trucks. I had 2 spots that were a concern and got fixed. Anyways,

What do you guys recommend, since I am in this mess. I have Icon 2.5 CDC extended travel shocks. I believe basically similar travel to bilstein 5100 aka long travel shocks.

Do you recommend, mounted the shocks on the outside ? My concerns for this is, will a 285/75/16 fit between tire and the 2.5 shocks when fully flexed.

Another thing I had in mind. Was to cut out the top shock tower. And weld a square plate. Taking the shape of the corner frame. Which would have the shock a little higher. Because the oem tower is a bowl shaped.

Did some research. See a lot of people run Ford F-250 mounts. Would like to hear people with 2.5 shocks and their opinions on off road with it on the outside

I wouldn't run 2.5" shocks outside the frame. Unless you really want to limit flex or have low backspacing wheels plus wheel spacers. I ran 2" shocks on mine and had to get 1.25" wheel spacers and notch my frame to get the clearance I wanted with a 12" shock. Space is very limited between the wheel and wheel well. If you are willing to extend bump stops, it makes things a lot less complicated. I wasn't willing to extend mine though.

12" of vertical travel with almost an 1" of shock travel left at full bump

I think I am going to. I might try and flip the original ones upside down to gain more travel.

I've seen few members here run 2.5 without messing with the frame though. Not sure.... that's where it's complicated!!! Outside frame would be easy. AssBurns says he ha to notch the frame. Brilliant is running 2.5 without. Wilson is also.

Just came a cross a Toyota FZJ80 94 with slee 6" with elocker in back. Not sure. On mikes how well maintained it is. Considering trading my !

I mean you can easily mount them outside the frame. But ask them how much they extended their bump stops and how much travel they actually gained. They all mounted theirs pretty low which makes me assume they either have a short shock (less than 10") or they had to extend bumps, or low backspaced wheels with spacers. I didn't want to sacrifice any suspension travel, especially up travel. At ride height I'm sitting at 7" of up travel and 5" of down travel. If they have 12" of travel and numbers close to that, I'd be very impressed.

This is what icon sent me

2003-UP Toyota 4Runner V.S. 2.5 Series RR Rear Shocks w/CDCV (0-3" Lift) | 57810CP

I believe if you have more then 3" of lift in back. You need 03 4Runner rear shocks or fj cruisers. That's what 5100 Bilstein are.

Biggest concern on mounting outside. Is tire clearance. We are talking about 2.5 shocks.
