FML man FML!!!!!!!

im trying to take off my middle muffler piece today, and all bolts came off except the one thats holding the last pipe to the muffler, I STRIPPED IT !!!, so i was like muaaaaaaaaa!!!!!. went to sears got a set of GRIP TITE. tried to do it, it has grip but the bolt is so tight the socket just stripped the bolt even more. :dammit:. what should i do , i know my last option is just grind the bolt off, but are there and old timers know a trick or to to help me.

sawzall, grinder, hacksaw are all good options. i usually don't even bother with trying to loosen the bolts when i'm working on the exhaust

Use the hand held torch or spray it with PB Blaster.

You heat the nuts and bolts until you see it red then use visegrip. it should loosen the nuts. old trick in the book....

don't heat the gas tank and you should be fine

if you have doubt ....don't do it yourself. take it to the garage and let the technician do it for you.

omg that sounds like fun, is it safe to do it under the car?

Study the underside enough to be sure you aren't blasting a fuel line or brake line with the torch and you should be fine.

Or go to Ace/TrueValue and get something. Even a MAP torch would help and they're super cheap. Do hit with some PB Blaster or similar the night before. Several hours with a little penetrant can do amazing things. Most of us don't have enough patience.

Here's a trick I learned reading Trucking Magazine:

1) Take a Propane torch, heat up the bolt near the nut.

2) Find a wax candle that your wife or girlfriend has lying around the house.

3) Immediately after heating the bolt, touch the end of the candle to the same area, and use the tool of your choice to turn the nut or bolt.

The wax is drawn into the threads, and lubricates them, making the removal of the bolt really easy!


I was sceptical when reading this myself, but after using this trick when I tried to take apart my strut, I was convinced! The nut was stripped, but came off like nothing after I did the candle trick!:wink2:

see my problem is that my bolt is stripped and the not is welded to the pipe.

If you have room to put a vicegrip on the end of the bolt, it should still work. That's what I had to use to take my nut off the top nut on my strut....should work the same way, providing your bolt still has corners left........:

there not really any corners left its pretty rounded. i think im just gonna grind it off.
