Fog Light Install

Hey guys, I've got an '01 SR5, not sport so I don't have fogs. I'm looking to get a set but 'Yota's are so effing expensive! Has anyone had luck with Hella's Mirco DE set? Is it a pain to install? I'd much rather go OE on this, as the harnesses are made for each other unlike the Hella's. Any input is good input!

i'm not sure what the deal is but i recall that people prefer the hella's they either swap in hella bulbs or swap in the housings, i can't remember which but as i recall it was a direct plug and play swap, there are more than a few threads on this here try a search for more detailed info.

try craigslist or ebay i think i remember seeing the stock ones go for like 150 on ebay or something a few months ago.

sorry buddy, wish i could help more!

I went through 2 sets of oem fogs and a set of Hella DE's before I have up on them. Oem ones rusted out and the Hellas aren't the best at keeping water out either. Stock fogs do look cool but don't do much for visibility. I have $70 500's (half the price of the Hellas and a third the price of oem). They work great on top of my bumper.

Also, the de kit is plug n play - so the connectors should match up with no problems (assuming your SR5 was pre wired for fogs)

Thanks to both of you guys! I didn't know the Hella's were plug and play but that kind of eases my mind. If I go the route of giant driving lights like the 500's, I'd need to replace my bumper face first, as it's falling apart due to rust :dammit:

i have the hella de's and havent had a problem yet. came with wiring instructions and a toyota factory switch for one of the little knock out sections to the left of the steering wheel. got mine from yellowandbluelighting.com $150 a set brand new

hella DE's are garbage

they fill with water, corrode out and fall apart. then hella (who is supposed to have a lifetime warranty on the housings) ignores you when you e-mail them or call them about it.

i put the caps back in

kellyj, would you mind postin a pic of ur lights wit the hellas on and the hellas off... i wanna see if mine are bright as they should be.

If they don't look as bright as you think they should, check the box. The 500's come in 3 forms:
1. Clear fog beam pattern
2. Clear spot beam pattern
3. Amber fog beam pattern

I bought option 3. They aren't as bright as the spot beam pattern ones, but that's fine with me because I wanted to be able to run my 500's whenever I wanted, and I wouldn't be able to do that if I had gotten the spot pattern ones, which are noticeably brighter since they are designed to reach further out

Hella DE's are true plug and play if you order the kit for the 4Runner.
Best place to order is Yellow and Blue Lighting. This is the kit for the SR5

My stock fogs crapped out and could not get to the bulbs so I replaced them completely.

If you do a search on "Hella DE" you will find a few threads with the specifics.

My install was a PITA since I broke a few mounting bolts trying to remove the 9 year old stock brackets. Once I solved that (removed my entire bumper), installing the new bracket and lights was quick. They plug into the existing connectors that are already there.

The kit also comes with a harness, relay and switch if there is no wiring.

I haven't had a single problem with them, even with heavy salting on the roads and lots of deep water.

They have better light output than OEM.

gotcha... mine must be the spot pattern, they shine a small pattern up close, but ive got them angled up and out to hit the side of the road to help me with the deer problem...

Maine... If i buy the Hellas somewhere else, maybe because they are cheaper, do they all come with the brackets to mount them? Will they still be plug and play or do I need to specify 4Runner? You might know, you might not... Worth asking.

I agree, the Micro DE's let water in. BUT they are easy to repair when they eventually stop working, for me this is about once a year. I just spent 15-20 mins removing corrosion with a dremel and a wire brush attachment. They have been working for 3+ months since I last did this. Kind of annoying, but they aren't bad lights even with the 1/year maintenance

I put some hella ff50's in my bumper. It came out awesome and light output is really nice.

The Hella DE's come in different kits. Some include just the lights, some with a bracket. Each vehicle uses a different bracket. While I found other vendors selling the lights cheaper, they did not have the 4Runner bracket.

Also, it is a different bracket than the OEM lights. If you find a used set of OEM brackets, Hella's will not work.

While it is a bit of coin, I see the value since the bracket is unique.

While there are many after-market fog lights that are cheaper. Having lights that fit in the cladding is the cleanest look, in my opinion.

Hope this helps.
