Fog light opinions

I want to add fogs to my 2000 T4R. what do you think of this look? i know i have factory mounting point for fogs, but the cheapest i can find those are for $130. i can get some rectangular fogs for 35 bucks. i will add the factory ones later but for now i would like something that will help me out on my nightly drive home on back roads

opinions?

Looks okay, would like to see them in person though. If you like them, i don't see any reason not to get them.

I have the same year 4Runner but mine is a Limited so it came with fog lights but they are crap in my opinion. I am interested in putting some fog/driving lights there as well but I am still trying to see how I will mount them. I guess I am just gonna have to cut the valence. The other option that I was thinking about was getting a simple bull bar from Hunter Wholesale on eBay which already comes with pre-drilled holes. In terms of lights, have you looked up IPF 968 or the IPF 868 yet because they are in my price range and they serve as a fog & driving lights. Please keep me updated if you ever decide to mount them on each side of the license plate.

no. i don't have them. i want to eventually add them but the cheapest i can find them for is $130. so for now 40 bucks all said and done sounds good to me and i'll add the factory style ones later after i get further down on my mod priority list


2000t4rAKS: have you tried changing the bulb in your factory fogs? i've heard that can make a big difference. if you do change them, yellow/amber light is supposed to be better in bad weather so you could try some Hella Yellowstar bulbs. As for the valence. there is a metal bar that runs across the bumper behind the plastic that i think would be perfect for mounting lights. and i think you would only have to cut one of the slats depending on the size of the lights. i'm going to try to reglue it at a right angle to see if i can make it look somewhat factory. i'll do a write up when i''m done

I don't think they look as good as the OEM fogs (only aesthetically speaking), but they will probably get the job done. For $30, why not? :bigok:
 
My '99 Limited came with those OEM corner fogs and I must say they really su$k.

I installed a set of no name 55w fog/driving lights for the rear and they RULE. Like $30 at NAPA.

If it was me, I would get the simple rectangular driving lights, cut out the divider and mount them right in the facia as you show in your picture.

For wiring, I liked running to the battery (w/inline fuse) and installing a simple rocker using one of the empty switch positions on the lower left, below the dimmer knob.

Skip the OEM's, not worth it.
 
I used a set of Silverstars in my fogs and they were quite an improvement over OEM bulbs but they didn't work too well in the rain so I switched over to a set of Optilux fog bulbs and they really helped in inclement weather.
 
One benefit is..

One additional benefit of doing after-market fog lights is you can control the lights independent of the DRL, low and high beams.

Sometimes you want just fogs, no low beam. Those who experience real fog (like on the coast of Maine) know what I mean.
 
Either way, i think i'll go with some aftermarket ones by the license plate and maybe add the OEM's later

I agree with you, the OEM's are worthless. I was thinking about just cutting the valence on either side of the license plate and just mounting them like Dylan suggested.

I have always wanted to do that mod but there was a quirk with the 2000 model. I have a 2000 Limited and my DRL is controlled by a small box mounted close to the battery. I can easily disable the DRL by just disconecting the connector. However, I was not sure where the DRL Relay (D8) was. I was in contact with JA but since I have been busy, I never got a chance.

Very true about the wiring, I guess if I retrofit the wiring with a 4 Gauge, that would be sufficient to run 100W bulbs right??? Thanks for the tips.

That looks really good and clean. Congrats man, I am glad to hear that it worked out. I was wondering if you could give me the details on the aux lights you used. I think they are Hellas but I was just wondering because I was planning on getting the IPF 968 and they are 7" wide. Please post the write-up, thanks.

Right now i'm running Blazer All-Weather Halogen Fog Lights(cheap no-names from Walmart) just so i could see how the fogs would work. i will probably drop in some Hellas later. the Blazers measure 5 1/2"W x 3"H so they are pretty small. i don't think you can fit anything that much bigger in there because i'm pretty sure i measured it at 6"W x 5.5"H then it tapers off to 4"W at the top. you could always mount the license plate somewhere else and then you would have plenty of room

Thanks for the write-up. Those lights maybe cheap but they look like they are working out pretty well for you. You are right though, I will not be able to fit the IPF 868's because they are 7"W. Very detailed pics on the write-up...sweet!!!
