Fog Light Switch connections

I just recieved the same fog light switch that iFORCE has in his photos. There are 4 prongs coming off the back- anyone have any idea what the fourth tab does, and what order they are in?

I know one is ground, one is direct power to the switch for light, and one goes to the fog light relay, but what is the fourth for???

Any help would be appreciated

The 4th pin is to light up the switch. You have to tap power from another source. I used the green wire from the DAC button.

I added the switch today to power my PIAA fog lights, and I thought I would share how I wired it (Hopefully I am not the only one who is a bit confused initially) . . . . .

There are 4 plugs on the Toyota Tacoma factory fog light switch. What seemed to be the best way to wire it is as follows:

There is a small plastic circle, sort of orange in color, on one side of the switch. This is the back of the light that causes the switch to light up when powered. The plug that is directly under this, on the outside of the unit, is ground [1]. The two middle plugs should be wired together [2+3], and then connected to the fog light relay, or whatever it is you want the switch to turn on. The last plug, on the opposite side from the circle, on the outside, opposite the ground, is your power [4]. This should be spliced from something that only has power when the ignition is on. Or, if you want power all the time, this can be connected to the battery directly. Or, if you want the fog lights to come on only when the parking lights are on, this plug should be spliced into a power line that operates the parking lights.

When this is wired, the switch will be dark and off when not in use. When pushed in, the fog lights will come on, and the switch will light up. I wired plug #4 to a fuse that only has power when the ignition is on, that way I can use the fog lights independantly of the parking lights, but they will go off automatically when the ignitiion is off.

I am about to start the wiring for my new off-road lights and have a question.

I ordered and received the new Tacoma switch and electrical connector (part # 90980-11090). The connector obviously fits into the switch and aligns with the four leads. Ho

How did you hook-up the four wires to this connector? It seems there should be another connector with wires attached (for splicing) that would mate with the above connector.

Any help is appreciated.

If I follow you correctly you need four wire connectors which fit right into the square holes of the plastic connector you ordered. They snap right in, and the plastic connector you bought "guides" them into the wires in the back of the switch. I ordered them for 5 bucks each from the local toyota dealership. (Each metal wire connector comes with 3 inches of wire to which you can splice the wires from your fog lights.) $5 each is a big rip off, but I was too lazy to go searching at a hardware store. I believe they are generic connectors, but I'm not sure. You need four total. From there, see my post above about how to wire the switch.

Thanks for the info. I stopped by the dealer tonight and he knows what the wire connectors are but said he doesn't carry them. Hmmm.

Do you happen to have a Toyota part Number for these so iIcan order on-line from partznet.com?

Sorry, I don't know. All I did was ask at the local toyota dealership and they ordered them for me. I can't stop tomorrow, but I will try to stop by on Wed, and see if they can tell me what they are. Your local dealership really should be able to tell you, that sounds like laziness on their part. I think they use that type of connection for most of their electrical connections. I will check on Wed though.

I finally got around to installing the switch after having it for a few weeks (at least!).

I didn't have the wires and I wasn't going to pay $5 ea for little connectors so I soldered some wires onto the tabs on the switch. Then I attached a molex connector (computer power connectors) to the wires so I can unplug them when I take it apart.

Following ksneubec's wiring description, I connected the wires and *BOOM* What the f**k???

Any information is appreciated. I have tried two internet dealers and none have a clue as to the part numbers for the connectors and my local dealer is just plain lazy. I will hit the hardware and automotive supply stores this weekend.

Getting back to the original quesiton about the $10.00 switch at partznet, the pinouts are:

2 - Power
3 - Load
4 - Ground

I figured that ZOSO Runner has since found the answer, but I feel that there may be others looking in this thread for this information.

The above info about the Tacoma switch is very helpful. Below is a diagram to help clarify it even more. (Left is the back fo the switch, right is the front)

Looking at the diagram, you see why ksneubec's switch illuminates only when the auxiliary lights are on. If you wanted it to illuminate with the headlamps (like all the other switches), just wire pin [1] or [2] to the headlamp-linked wire on a neighboring switch and run the other to ground. Since the little bulb is not an LED, it should not matter which is ground and which is hot.

that's the one I used for rear marker lights. I put it on the side as I have a V8. It lights up an orangy red at night.

iFORCE, did you have to remove the bottom part of the dash to install that switch? looks great btw...thats how I want to do mine.

do the instructions for the lights indicate where the parking lights line is? how do I find out which one that is?

Lou, I installed mine in one of the blanks on the dash to the left of the steering wheel. I took off the fuse compartment cover, stuck my fingers in there, and popped out the blank. Then I used a 12V circuit tester to find the illumination circuit on the nearby center diff lock switch, and tapped off that to light up my new switch.

BTW, the center diff lock switch is set up just like the Tacoma fog light switch, so if you look at the diagram above, you'll see which wires should work.

Finding the right wire to tap into for illumination should be as easy as finding something (switch or whatver) that lights up when the parking lights are on, and then using a circuit tester to isolate which wire is hot only when the parking lights are turned on.

I hope that makes sense and answers your question.
