Folks with 4.30 or 4.10 Gears running 33" Tires. Fuel economy?

I never got around to it. Trying to get out every weekend has it's downfalls =p

I am SHOCKED that you didn't notice a power loss. When I stepped the tires up it felt like I took off the supercharger.
 
Try running in 3rd gear in the city. Helps keep the rpms up and the engine in it's power band. I don't even use OD on mine. Useless gear with 410s and 33s. Does nothing but gear hunt on the freeway. I'm just saving pennies to get 488s. I think 456s would be ideal but add some weight on and they will be lacking. With the power band being as high up as it is on these motors it needs to turn some revs and 488s accomplish that nicely while still having room to spare for larger tires or more weight.

My fuel suffers drastically in city without overdrive. Power wise is sucks and hard on tranny but I like saving fuel. But yes on freeway gear hunting trying to keep her at 75mph.

I did a 600 mile trip not to long ago, drove the 4runner at the speed she wanted on highway (60-70mph) and she averaged 19mpg. Best Ive ever got!!
 
I'd rather save the trans than worry about mileage. But my experience is the exact opposite. I get better mileage in 3rd than 4th because I'm not constantly downshifting and stay in the power band.

I dont really constantly downshift in the city and with ECT on it will shift early so it does not need to jump a lot and make you get on the gas to downshift.

When I hit the mountain pass going up 24 or 70 I will turn off OD and it helps a lot. Only way I noticed one time was because I was getting such bad fuel mileage and thought something was wrong. My OD off light is broken and did not know it was off. Had not hit highway so could not feel the difference. Turned overdrive back on and cars fuel mileage got better again. I get 14-16mpg city and 17-19mpg highway on my 4:10s.
 
If I knew how gutless these things were I'd have opted for the 5spd instead of the auto. Sure is nice in traffic though.

SUPERCHARGER :lookout:

But seriously, there's absolutely nothing gutless about a supercharged 5VZ-FE, even with an auto. Nothing like and easy bolt-on 75HP and 60+ lbs of torque.

Okay so just did a tank driving mostly hwy for work. This time I calculated my tire size in and it came out to 18.85 mpg. Kinda excited to know I've been doing a lot better then I thought. Also note I have left ect off during this tank
 
I'll add another variable :). When I had 285/75x16 Goodyear SilentArmors I got 15-16 city and 18-20 highway. Now with my Duratrac 285/75x16's I get 14-15 city and 17-18 highway. 1999 auto 4x4 4.30 gears. The Duratracs are way heavier than the SilentArmors were, at least they feel that way when I take them off to do my brakes.

I have a 3.4L. I don't think I've ever seen a 3rd gen with a 2.7, let alone one with an auto tranny. I imagine they are pretty rare. But still exist?

Like I mentioned before, I do drive slow... commuting in Phoenix traffic. My overall average seems to always come out around 21.5 - 22.0 mpg. I usually fill up at close to 350 miles and get about 15.5 -16 gal to go in before the pump clicks off.

I had 285/75/16 BFG ATs before, and haven't noticed any difference at all with the new GY Duratracs.
 
This is a pretty old thread......I'm curious how the hell you guys are getting such good mpg's! Are your speedometers calibrated (Dakota digital, Super Lift TrueSpeed)? Are you using a gps to pull the miles travelled?

4.88's & 285/70/17 (33x11.5)

I'm running 285/70/17 Fierce Attitude MT's (don't laugh they were cheap and have lasted over 40k so far) which measure 33x11.5. I just realized myself these were 2.1% larger than the previous 295/75/16 I have the speed calibrator programmed for. The next few tanks of gas will be driving granny style to see what's what but so far 14-15 mpg's is the norm. The next set will be Toyo MT or AT 285/75/17 taller and narrower.

Ps I use the gps to set the speed so that the speedometer and gps are consistent

I have a feeling that some of the high mpg claims are due to not correcting to tire size as it was explained to me. I have 265/75r16 MTs and I can't get better than maybe 19.1. [MENTION=100116]D Farms[/MENTION] uses Torque and it is saying he gets 20 mpg and he is running 35's. Mileage in these things is an enigma at best apparently.

City is consistently 15mpg
Hwy not sure as I don't travel on one but once in a blue moon
My commute is 2 stops in 5 miles 1 way to work and the same on the way home.
