Folks with 4.30 or 4.10 Gears running 33" Tires. Fuel economy?

Year:2000 Auto 4x4
Tire Size:285/75/16
Gears:4.30
This is going off my Scanguage Average
MPG City:13-15
MPG Hwy:19-23

I have a feeling that some of the high mpg claims are due to not correcting to tire size as it was explained to me. I have 265/75r16 MTs and I can't get better than maybe 19.1. D Farms uses Torque and it is saying he gets 20 mpg and he is running 35's. Mileage in these things is an enigma at best apparently.

to be more specific, I have torque and set it to use multiple sensors for measuring mpg. I also calibrated it for my tire size. on one trip, driving very conservatively at 50mph for most of it, I got 20mpg. I verified this with the normal fill up method.

normally i get 15-16.

on my offroad trips, I average 14mpg which is combined highway and trail.

What are you getting MPG wise?

I've got 265/75/16's , duratracs, ToyTec boss I get 15 all day long. w/ 5speed

I get 17-18 mpg. You should be able to get better than 15 with your setup. I don't drive slow, but I drive with gas mileage in mind. I try to avoid stopping and accelerating all the time and Im always looking ahead so I can coast in neutral if a light turns red (unless Im blocking someone behind me). This saves gas, but also puts less wear and tear on the vehicle period, especially the brakes. Why hit the brakes when my inefficient mud tires will slow me down on their own :thumb:

hey alex, im not gonna give you my stats cause you know them and ive given you my old mpg before i regeared. what i will say is that go with the 4.88s. thats where im at with 35s and i wish i had gone with 5.29s. honestly my 4.88 are still a little too tall for me. i can drive the truck 80+mph with no issues and the motor still has plenty of RPM left to go... and 80+ is starting to get sketchy with it. id still be able to do 80+ with 5.29s but getting there would be easier and i probably would be maxed out somewhere between 90 and 100... and as we all know thats more than fast enough for any public roads. my vote for you with all your weight and the RTT is go 4.88, you will still be plenty good on the freeway.

In regards to gearing, there's always so much talk about street driving characteristics. No one talks about the difference off-road. My 4.10's, 285's and manual trans are totally fine for all street driving and I feel like even 35's would be very livable without a regear. However, crawling with stock gears sucks. Slipping the clutch is mandatory and crawling turns into a game of avoiding stalling while keeping the Rpm's as low as possible to prevent smoking the clutch. The auto transmission obviously doesn't have this problem, but you still have to rev the engine so high to generate enough torque for the torque converter to start transmitting power to the wheels.
I'd love to see how much of a difference 488's actually make over my current 4.10's. Regardless, I'll be doing dual cases this fall. I like my low highway Rpm's and the 19% difference between 4.10's and 4.88's is pretty small compared to the 228% or 470% difference possible with a second case
