For those with squishy brakes after TBU...

I have experienced what other have complained about with the TBU. After I installed my kit which was from eBay (non-OEM), my brakes had longer than travel before they grabbed, but once they did, it was noticeably stronger. I drove on this for almost a year and a half and was just used to it. I also bled the system what seemed like 100x.

What bothered me more than the travel was the rattling! Over the smallest of bumps, my front end rattled like it was coming apart. After some investigating with a mallet...it was my brake pads rattling inside of the caliper. For some reason, the Pistons were not fully seated holding the pads next to the rotor. I confirmed this by hitting bumpy roads and slightly depressing the brakes, no rattles!

I ordered the OEM shim kit from camelback, ripped off the backing plate from my aftermarket pads and installed the slotted shim followed by the solid shim. I not have rattle free brakes and it stops confidently like a big brake upgrade should!!

I understand this isn't the case for everyone who has the TBU but I have the feeling it will fix most.

Glad to hear you got this corrected.
I went OEM parts for my TBU. No issues except people commenting when they drive my 4Runner that the brakes are strong.

There are also clips that clip over the pads once installed that helps stop the rattle.

JayRolla is correct. You need some anti-rattle springs that go between the inner and outer pads. They help push the pads back towards the pistons to reduce NVH and pad wear. I don't believe they were ever made for the 4Runner or Tundra, but they should be easy to retrofit.

I had these springs installed also but there was still an unsettling amount of gap between the pistons/pad/rotor. They were brand new but didn't hold them apart hard enough.
