Fortera or Cross-Terrains?

I know most of you are more into the Revos/BFGs etc because you have the chance to off-road a bit, but I'm on road 99% of the time and am looking to replace the Dunflops with something that corners well, rides quiet and grips in rain/snow (on road).

I'm hoping to hear from those of you who have tried the new Forteras and my second choice~the Michelin Cross-Terrains.

If you were in my shoes (agressive on-road driver) what would you put on your 4Runner and which ones would you stay away from?

Michelin is to tires what Toyota is to SUV's. Highest quality fewest problems and longest wear. I always choose Michelin over any other brand period. I am sure there are speciality tires out there that fit special use vehicles but I've always had great experience with Michelin tires and the Cross Terrains seem like they were made for the 4th Generation 4runners, if you are driving it like I am which is 98% on road. Check the ratings by owners on www.tirerack.com

let someone else expereince Goodyear quality, or lack of......

Expand your tire choice to Michelin LTX M/S too. they are veyr good on road, rain and snow.

Are the Revos really a good on-road tire? I get the feeling from all the feedback about them that they are more aggressive/off-road tire type.

Couldn't agree more. Michelin all the way. CT is my 1st choice (for the "car like ride" and handling.) or LTX M/S for more of a truck ride and tread life if thats what you want. Can't go wrong either way. Would have gotten a Mich all-terrain for my winters but they don't make the size I want so I went with the next best choice, BFG A/Tko (BFG is a Mich company.)

You are right. The BFG A/T and Bridge REVO are more all-terrain than all-season. Sounds like the CT's are what you need. Let someone else prove out the Forts on their dime.

Get the Michelins, I've put about 20k on mine and they still have LOTS of tread left, a lot more than I could say for the Bridgestones I had. Very quiet and comfortable ride.

With 256/70/17

being more and more the factory spec size from Ford to Dodge to Chevy and Toyota (4Runners and Sequoias), one would think Michelin would start making that size for light trucks in their LTX A/T line......

Yeah, even a better 16" selection would have been nice. Excellent tire. I put over 200,000 Km (120K mi) on a set on my last ride. I was amazed at how quiet & smooth yet still had a good A/T grip. Oh well...

Had Michelin LT-X M+S tires on my '98 4Runner. They had lots of tread left at 75K miles, but they flat sucked in the wet and were absolutely dangerous in snow!

Have Michelin Cross-Terrains on our current 4Runner, and they are better-performing than the LT-Xs in every respect, save (maybe) tread life. I'm projecting "only" 80K or so miles before they'll need to be replaced. When that happens, my truck will get another set of cross-terrains. They're excellent!

Thank you for all your feedback! I had the LTXs on my '93 4Runner and though they handled nice on dry, were very bad on wet roads, almost scary! That was my concern on the Cross-Terrains too. But from what you all are saying, that isn't a problem. I realize they are two different beasts all-together. I'll start doing my best-price shopping now. Thanks again!

Keep in mind that

every person will have slightly different expereinces with any particular tire depending on the vehicle they have, the style of driving, the type of weather or terrain, etc.

I read up on reviews on tirerack and epinions to get an overall feedback on the tires from numerous reviews and see if there is an overall pattern either good, bad, or just plain unpredictable results, and weight the majority feedback against the specific complaints. I think that's the best way to judge a tire; from a broad persepctive rather than individual fluctuations.

When I go to the Goodyear page on tirerack, I find some people either love them or hate them, wildly divergent and unpredictable feedback. When I read the Revos page, BFG, or Michelin page, the vast majority rave about their tires, and conversely, criticize about the Goodyears they HAD and what an improvement iafter replacing the Goodyears.

I just could not justify spending $700-$800 on tires that 1) came from Goodyear, 2) have not been proven with thousands of satisfied customers, and 3) not have had quality control issues.

So let someone else spend their dime and see if the worse tires in the world have Goodyear written all over them.....
