Fortuner and 4Runner Side by Side

I have talked to some friends in Costa Rica.
They have the Fortuner there and the 4R as well
The fortuner is basically the Hilux Pick up made SUV.
Many parts of the Hilux are exchangeable. Including the hood.
looking it from the front you will have problems finding differences between both.
Yes it does have rear brakes and It has a shorter wheelbase than the 4R.
The engines are smaller and they have a couple options in diesels also. The 4R only has the 4.0l gas or the 3.0l TDI. No V8 available to either.
The fortuner does not have to meet the requirements of USA in terms of height of bumper and It has a higher front clearance.
Think of the fortuner as the little tough brother of the 4R.
And it is not a wussy Rav or higlander... it may even beat the 4R in terms of tough construction.

Or, if you have really deep pockets, double-the-price, 4.2 liter V6 TurboDiesel Land Cruiser.

For many years the Hilux and the Toyota truck in USA (pre tacomas) were built on the same platform, So you were right, till 1995.
I think after 1996 they start to have some differences.
They are still close but not the same anymore. Hilux is shorter than the USA tacoma. Tacoma platform as well 4R's have meet several USA standards that are not required in many other countries. Plus some amenities that US costumers can afford are not available/required overseas.
I might be wrong, I know the 4R is sold in other coutries but I believe the US Tacoma is not sold anywhere else (except Canada). One extra note: Double cab Hilux were sold overseas since 1986, but double cabs tacomas did not start until 2000.

Yep, they still haven't modified their website, but Toyota no longer puts Diesel engines on 4Runners, due to the IMV (International Multipurpose Vehicle project), which the Fortuner is part of.
If you want, go to Toyota Japan, http:www.toyota.jp , and you will see there's no longer a Diesel engine option.
The Toyota Caribbean website still has the Diesel option and doesn't even list the Fortuner, even though Diesel is no longer available and the Fortuner is being sold:

Fortuner and 4Runner side by side
In Jan of 2017 I rented a Fortuner diesel 4x4 in S, Africa on self drive Safari.
In the USA I currently have a 1996 4runner 4x4 3.4l with standard transmission that I have put 200k miles on driving is all conditions from Alaska to central Mexico. As well I have driven all the newer models of 4Runner.
The Fortuner is not as big as the current USA 4Runner but is as large as my 1996 and much better appointed.
Offroad it felt much more stable and had very good traction and with the diesel excellent low end pull.
My calculated MPG average was 25-27 offroad and about 30mpg on the open road at 100-120 kph.
This is an excellent vehicle well representing Toyotas reputation of durable quality 4x4 vehicles.
The only negative is it is not available in the USA, If it was I would choose it over the new 4Runner by virtue of the excellent diesel engine and ease of drivability on and off road.
