Forum "insiders" who can provide status of a VIN?

I am fairly certain, although often mistaken, that Toyota does not engage in these updates. Unlike audi, bmw, etc. Sad as I know how exciting it is. Frankly, ports all that matters to toyota. Till a truck gets there, its not even assigned to an owner. Seeing as you can't custom build a toyota. Not only that, but almost all TRDPro parts are installed in port, meaning its not even assembled till it leaves there. Someone may tell me Im wrong.

I believe you are mistaken. I have successfully factory ordered 4Runners on three occasions. Many/most dealers do not like factory orders, and many will refuse to even acknowledge the option. In this case, I have the VIN and the dealer receiving the allocation has put my name on it. In the past, I have found helpful forum members who are able to access the Toyota system and provide latest projected dates for port arrival and dealer delivery (along with other useful information). Technically, this one isn't a factory order as we found an identical unit already inbound to my dealership.

Transit time, from Japan to CA, barring a stop in HI, is 10-11 days.

Somebody, somewhere, knows the ETA of your ship, but finding him/her is probably not easy. When your ship hits port, a Toyota database gets updated. Until then, good luck.

My 2010 was on a ship when I bought it, and my salesguy knew when it hit port. But while it was in rail transit it didn't get tracked again until it came off the railcar and on a truck.

Again, I've done this before through the forum with great ease. The Toyota inventory system "knows the ETA of the ship," and also the projected dealer delivery date. Sure, things change, but a bit of dated information is still useful to me in scheduling my upcoming weeks. :cheers:

If you know the name of the ship you can track it online.
