Found! Front End Mask (Bra) for 2006+ 4Runner

I would never put anything on my truck that had risks of messing up the paint. That sucks for those of you who experienced this the hard way.

I agree with josh and damengr.

I definitely would not put any bra type of cover due to paint problems. Can really screw with the resale value I think.

I grew up the son of a body shop owner and dad always told me how many times people would bring in cars for repaint after using a bumper or hood bra.

Come to think of it, I hardly see those anywhere on the road. Can't recall the last time I've seen one.

I saw a bra on a mustang near my house the other day. All I could say to myself was "BLEH Nasty." It looked rediculous.

If you have something constructive to say, by all means, type it.

If not, there are plenty of threads on the subject archived where the discussion degraded into meaningless personal opinions like "gay", "stupid", etceteras.

Remember: one man's shite is another's golden poo.... :D

The intent of this thread is to provide purchasing contact and information for those actively seeking out a front end mask.

You posted in accessories, meaning it's open to whatever discussions we decide to open. Post it in the "Classifieds" section if you plan on only trying to sell something without open discussions on it.

And no one has yet said your product is "gay" we are just expressing our opinions on how they look, as well as how they affect paint jobs and other things to that affect.

I posted in accessories because a front end mask is an accessory. Why would I post in classifieds? I'm not selling anything.

No, you didn't call front end masks "gay". I said others have.

The content of a thread is dictated by the first post of the thread. It sets the topic to be discussed. To drift into "whatever discussions we decide to open" is called going off-topic. Forum netiquette dictates minimizing OT chatter and staying on topic as much as humanly possible.

I have spent enough hours in the archives on several sites researching the subject to know how threads on the topic have the tendency to degrade into meaningless personal opinion. Why is it meaningless? Because nobody gets anything - no education, no enlightenment - further out of a thread when it happens.

My post was to gently remind those who come and read behind you that opinions regarding looks do not constructively contribute to the topic at hand. I would have thought the facetious "Remember..." comment would humorously get my point across. Since it apparently it went over like a box of rocks, let me be more blunt:

If someone is intentionally searching for threads on front end masks, it is because they are looking to purchase one. If they are looking to purchase one, then logically it follows they are either neutral or like the way they look. Negative personal opinions concerning looks are going to be perceived as inflammatory comments. Why? Well, let's use you as an example. You effectively said "If a person puts one on their vehicle, they're nasty and rediculous [sic]". It does not matter if that was how you intended it to be taken or not. In life how you are perceived is just as important (if not more) as the truth, whatever it may be.

I see no foul in pointing out to people the faux pas so they may avoid stepping in it.

...........this is not group therapy. people can say what they want, when they want about whatever they want. If a person wanted to express an opinion about car bras and how they appear, wear, or any other aspect of the product it is simply childish to impose your own "rules" on the poster. for myself I was quite seriously considering the bra until these so called "negative posts" came to light. as such I appreciate the heads up of others who had experienced poor product performance. since that apparently does not concern you buy one and many happy miles, but puhlease........."faux pas"? now that is over the top.........

What alaskaman said, anyone who is considering purchasing one of these bras that you believe to be the most amazing invention known to man, might like to know that many people have experienced them ruining their paint job.

I know I would go ape-s**t if someone hyped up something so much, all to have it cause thousands of dollars in damage. I'm sure many people feel the same way about their 4runners too.

Fetcher, you have turned a thread about the ups and downs of the bras, and people's experiences, into a childish argument. Please just allow people to share their experiences. And if you say you aren't selling the product, then who cares how peoples experiences affect future profits?

The bras should've died in the '90s since they don't help in the looks department either.

Yes,a bra is the best protection but you gotta be diligent about it's care or you'd be better off not having one.

In summer one might not be bad but with winter around here and sanding the roads you just get too much sand and grit stuck underneath the bra that if you don't get it out of under it fairly quickly it just starts to "sand" the clearcoat. No bra fits perfectly snug.

So....

Let me make sure I am understanding you correctly. You feel your "freedom of speech" [sic] is somehow threatened and in jeopardy by a simple request for people who voluntarily choose to participate in this thread to stay on topic?

Interesting.

All I am asking is for the discussion stay relevant:

1. Negative personal opinion of "how it looks" has absolutely zero relevance as to how well it works, if it works, or what damage it may cause. The products perceived aesthetic value does not cause paint scratching. Or paint clouding. Or product failure and subsequent automotive damage.

2. As I have maintained, if it is relevant, by all means, speak up. Have a personal experience of a mask scratching your paint? Post away. A personal experience of it clouding your paint? Be sure to point it out. Experience some other product failure and subsequent automotive damage? By all means add it to the pile.

I can't make the distinction between the two types of criticism any clearer. One is constructive; the other is not and can be perceived as inflammatory. If you still cannot appreciate the difference after all that wind on the matter, I fear we have arrived at an impasse on the subject.

How is using the term faux pas over the top? Isn't the definition of a faux pas "a social blunder"? If being perceived as insulting someone's decision to purchase/use a product through posting a perceived derogatory and/or inflammatory remark just for the sake of doing so isn't a blunder, what is?

The fact the constructive criticism others took the time to share here helped you make what you feel is the appropriate decision for your circumstances is wonderful. I'm glad to hear the thread helped. Makes it totally worth it.

I never said they are amazing. Nor am I hyping them, whatever that means. I can tell you what I have said:

1. For those who have been told otherwise, masks fitting the late model 4th gen are available.

2. For those looking for an alternate to the (in my opinion) insanely marked up 3M products, there is still one.

3. Who the manufacturer is and who I personally purchased from.

4. Problems I had with the fit and directions and how I troubleshot them. What the product looks like in color. Criticisms I had of the product.

5. What the instructions say regarding paint clouding.

6. What the instructions say about paint scratching.

7. What my personal opinion is of risking paint scratching versus paint chipping and gouging.

If you do not take the time to do the research and educate yourself about the pros and cons of any aftermarket accessory before installing it and damage occurs, there is no one to blame but yourself. Trying to transfer the blame to some stranger who posted a personal opinion or anecdotal information you got off the Internet? Now that's childish.

FYI, it's fetch. Little f, no -er. Obviously fetcher is not my first choice for a username. :)

What argument? I see a request for staying relevant to the topic. I also see me taking the time to explain why I am asking when people seem to be, interestingly enough, actually threatened somehow by this request.

I am sharing my experiences, that's why I started the thread. And I have not had a problem with people sharing their relevant experiences, even if it's been negative constructive criticism, have I? If you can educate me as to how perceived inflammatory remarks regarding the appearance of a front end mask is appropriate and constitutes a relevant experience with the product, I will gladly admit I was wrong to take issue with people posting such.

Who brought up profits? Not I. Suggesting or implying yet again I am somehow doing this because I am trying to stealth it as a seller or stand to make some monetary gain by pimping my product is completely unfounded and offensive. Please do not continue to do so.

If you are still puzzled as to why I care people have access to a thread concerning who is manufacturing front end masks for 2006+ 4Runners, let me count the ways for you Josh220:

1. I found it very frustrating to not readily find what I was looking for - a front end mask fitting a 2007 4Runner.

2. I found it unacceptable the only product readily found was a 3M substitute being retailed at insane mark ups if one was not savvy enough to pull a DIY installation.

3. The threads archived on the subject were not helpful as the people repeatedly passed off the incorrect information that they simply did not exist.

4. It was also not helpful to find other archived threads would start off with someone asking where to buy a mask but then rapidly degrade into a free-for-all of negative comments on "how they looked".

5. After a lot of time and effort on my part, I found there was still one company manufacturing a vinyl front end mask.

6. In an effort to ensure no one else would go through frustration I did, I decided to post my findings and subsequent information on public forums. I also planned to update said thread with pictures and any personal experiences because I had read and know of both positive and negative relevant anecdotal stories concerning the use of vinyl front end masks. I wanted to add my bones to the pile, good or bad, in a single-source thread.

7. Currently working to ensure #6 is completed.

Good points why one would need to be particularly OCD about following the recommendations to routinely remove and clean the mask / clean and wax the vehicle if living where they use actual sand in the winter. Although, if that's the case, I wonder if one would even be needed. I don't think you'd have to worry as much about paint chipping and gouging in regions that use sand versus gravel, no?

The pictures I've seen of the Colgan bras seem to be pretty darn tight. Unfortunately, the latest model year they still manufacture for is 2005 IIRC. Same for the OEM masks. This one seems pretty snug except over the horizontal surfaces below the headlights and the lateral (outer) edge of the fog lights.

Still haven't done any long distance drives yet to see how this version stands up in terms of flapping/foiling/abrasion points along leading edges of the mask. Once I do though, I'll post the results.

I agree....especially on a 4Runner! Looks horrible, in my opinion. I could get the same look by taping a black plastic lawn & leaf bag to the front of my 4Runner...LOL

I'd rather get a few paints chips than have that abortion on the front end of my 4Runner!:biggrin2:
