I've had that problem before with my vehicles that sit for extended periods of time. If you leave the hood popped open to the first notch so it lets a little bit of light in they will usually not hang out in there for long. If it's dark they will nest under there. And yes either way you must get rid of them asap as they will eat the insulation off the wires and chew up the vacuum lines.

If you don't have cats, leaving the hood open is the next best method. In my vehicle rain and snow would have gotten to the wiring with the hood propped open. In my engine compartment I installed a 12V two element LED light that cost $4.95. The light is on constantly, haven't had a rat problem since.
